  1. "DEAD IN SIN.” “ALIVE IN CHRIST" Ephesians 2:1-11

  2. Satan’s religions, and even some who profess Christianity, do not believe in total depravity • Some Christians believe in a “second” work of grace. The first is being saved. The second is an experience that makes them think they can’t sin any more. Of course, they redefine “sin”. They can’t sin “big” anymore. • Some professing Christians think conversion is only for a few terrible sinners. The rest of us were born with a “spark” of God and all we need is teaching to “fan” it with “works”

  3. The Doctrinal Statement of Ottawa Bible Church 5. THE TOTAL DEPRAVITY OF MAN We believe that man was created in the image and likeness of God, but that in Adam's sin, the race fell, inherited a sinful nature, and became alienated from God (Genesis 1:26-27; Romans 3:22-23, 5:12) We furthermore believe that man is totally depraved, and of himself, utterly unable to remedy his lost condition (Ephesians 2:1-3, 12).

  4. Adam and Eve were the first and only human beings on earth, the beginning of humanity Elohim=God; Yah=Jehovah Humans (Adam & Eve) BODY =Doer SOUL =thinks, decides, feels SPIRIT =God connection John 4:24 God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.” FATHER =Planner SON =Doer SPIRIT =Power

  5. “in the day that you eat of it, you shall surely die” Gen. 2:17 Adam and Eve talked with God Adam and Eve hid from God Adam and Eve didn’t die physically, they lived and bore sons and daughters Adam lived 930 years! The spirit in each died the day they ate. Their loving relationship with God ended

  6. Since their spirit was now dead, they could not initiate a relationship with God The power line was down and no human way to fix it. God had to. God came to the rescue in Christ Ephesians 2:1 And you He made alive, who were dead in trespasses and sins,

  7. God has always taken the initiative from Genesis 1 to Revelation 22 Rom 5:8 But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. 10 For if when we were enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son,

  8. Ephesians 2:1 And you He made alive, who were dead in trespasses and sins, 2 in which you once walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit who now works in the sons of disobedience, 3 among whom also we all once conducted ourselves in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, just as the others.

  9. 4 But God, who is rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, 5 even when we were dead in trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), 6 and raised us up together, and made ussit together in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, 7 that in the ages to come He might show the exceeding riches of His grace in His kindness toward us in Christ Jesus.

  10. 8 For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, 9 not of works, lest anyone should boast. 10 For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.

  11. Ephesians 2:2-3 • DEAD (in spirit towards God) because of sin • LIFE is programmed by the body, the mind, and the “prince” of the power of the air • DOING, listening, drinking, watching, talking, going, rebelling, bullying, hating, partying, competing, lusting, straining . . . . pretty much like everyone else! • The whole world (1 John 5:19) is the devil’s chess board. People are the pawns

  12. That’s the way we were, BUT GOD INTERVENEDEph. 2:4-10 • God is RICH in mercy v.4 • God loved us with His GREAT love (v.4) even when we WERE DEAD in trespasses • God MADE us alive together with Christ v.5 • God saved us because of HIS GRACE, not because we deserved His salvation v.5 • God raised us up together in Christ v.6 • God made us sit together with Christ in heavenly places. V.6

  13. Understand your calling, duty, and future 7. For ages to come God will point us out to all the holy angels and all the saints of heaven “Look at this one, My Trophy of My grace” v.7 8. His grace and His gift of faith to our hearts, enables us to believe the Gospel v.8 9. God, the Master craftsman of humans, has created us to do (His) good works. 10. God planned a journey of good works, and ought to walk down the road He made for us

  14. The sin desiring human nature received from Adam doesn’t go away. Our new nature received from God wants to stop the old nature from sinning

  15. From the moment we received Christ, The New Man” and the “Old Man” are wrestling within Gal. 5: 12 For you, brethren, have been called to liberty; only do not use liberty as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another. For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” I say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh. For the flesh lusts against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; and these are contrary to one another, so that you do not do the things that you wish.

  16. Satan hasn’t given up control either. He helps the “Old Man” wrestle the “New Man” Eph. 6:11Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places

  17. The armor God gives us to win in life is listed in Eph. 6:14-18 • TRUTH • RIGHT • PEACE • FAITH • SALVATION • THE BIBLE • PRAYER

  18. OBC Doctrinal statement THE TWO “MEN” WITHIN THE BELIEVER We believe that every saved person possesses both the “old man” and the “new man” with provision made for victory of the “new man” over the “old man” through the power of the indwelling Holy Spirit (Romans 6:13, 8:12-13; Galatians 5:16-25, Ephesians 4:22-24, Colossians 3:10, 1 Peter 1:14-16, 1 John 5-9

  19. 1 John 2:1 My little children, these things I write to you, so that you may not sin. And if anyone sins, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. And He Himself is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the whole world.

  20. Sin. Confess. Forgiven. Sin. Confess. Forgiven. Sin. Confess. Forgiven. Sin. Confess. Forgiven ESV 1 John 3:5 You know that he appeared in order to take away sins, and in him there is no sin. 6 No one who abides in him keeps on sinning; no one who keeps on sinning has either seen him or known him. 7 Little children, let no one deceive you. Whoever practices righteousness is righteous, as he is righteous. 8Whoever makes a practice of sinning is of the devil,

  21. Herb. 12:33 Consider him who endured from sinners such hostility against himself, so that you may not grow weary or fainthearted. 4 In your struggle against sin you have not yet resisted to the point of shedding your blood.5 And have you forgotten the exhortation that addresses you as sons?

  22. Abandon the sin. Confess it and receive forgiveness. Prov. 28:13. Nurture it and you will be chastised Heb. 12:5 “My son, do not regard lightly the discipline of the Lord, nor be weary when reproved by him. 6  For the Lord disciplines the one he loves, and chastises every son whom he receives.”
