Purpose of Presentation • To provide awareness level information related to determining participation in state assessment focusing on students with disabilities
IDEA • Since 1998, IDEA has required ALL students with an IEP to be assessed using the state and district-wide assessments. • If a student’s IEP determines it is not appropriate for the student to participate in the [general] state and district-wide assessment, the student must be assessed using an alternate assessment.
NCLB: Section 200.6 • “A state’s academic assessment system required under Section 200.2 must provide for the participation of ALL students in the grades assessed.” • “The state’s academic assessment system MUST provide for one or more alternate assessment for students with disabilities as defined under section 602(3) of IDEA.”
