  2. Personification • An animal given human-like qualities or an object given life-like qualities. • Sun’s down, or theboat hugged.

  3. Alliteration • Consonant sounds repeated at the beginning of word. • Caleb calls Chris ‘cause he’s coming to California.

  4. Assonance • Repeated VOWEL sounds can be anywhere in the words. • I bake the cake and ate.

  5. Hyperbole • Exaggeration often used for emphasis. • Man that’s like a million times harder!

  6. Onomatopoeia • Words that imitate the sound they are naming.

  7. Metaphor • A direct comparison of two unlike things. • My mind is an ocean; my words are a river, so keep your eras open as I continue to deliver.

  8. Simile • A comparison of two things using “like” or “as”. • My mind is like an ocean; it’s as smooth as jazz but it’s only a simile if it uses “like” or “as”.

  9. Imagery • Most images are visual, but they can also appeal to the senses of sound, touch, taste, or smell.

  10. Idiom • An expression where the literal meaning of the word is not the meaning of the expression. Its means something other than what it actually says.(it’s raining cats and dogs)
