6 Behaviors for Better Grades • Never miss class • It’s about getting the material that is presented and it is about being seen by the professor. • Sit in the First Three Rows • This puts you front and center, where the professor will see you sitting with the rest of the “A” students. It has nothing to do with being able to hear, see or otherwise make sure you get the information.
6 Behaviors for Better Grades • Visit Professor Weekly. Showing up with a question shows professors that you are engaged in the material, and more importantly it give the professor an opportunity to tell you what material is most important, what you really need to know... in other words, what will be on the test. Some potential questions may include the following: • How did you decide what content you would include in our course and how does it resonate with you personally? • Tell me about your research interest when you pursued your Ph.D.? Has that changed or become even more specialized? • If you could sum up what you would like your students to take away from this specific course, what would it be and why? • I am personally struggling with this _________ component of _____ week’s lecture. Could you unpack that for me?
6 Behaviors for Better Grades • Review before Class. In addition to being prepared it will help you answer the first key question the professor will ask: where die we leave off last time? • Study with Note Cards. This is a mental trick on yourself. First, you only need to study what you don’t know, so you can set aside the cards you already do know. As you see that second pile grow, you are creating a positive reinforcement for yourself. • Do Extra Credit. Extra credit work often gives you the extra points that are added onto YOUR FINAL GRADE, not just a test grade. Even more importantly, you are placing yourself in the only group who tends to do extra credit work: A students!
Associate Life Balance Successful people make the daily choice to: • Focus on specific goals • Work smarter instead of harder • Balance their lives across many areas • Keep a planner • Manage their time wisely
3 Areas of Balance Research shows that focusing on these three areas will lead to a more balanced and content person. • Physical • Sleep, nutrition, exercise, regular check-ups with the doctor • Intellectual • Doing your best on assignments, engaging in stimulating thought: current events, arts & culture, strategizing • Spiritual • This can be religious, but can focus on feeling content and centered within yourself. This might mean engaging with nature or connecting with people
Theta Pi Scholarship Structure • The Chaplain oversees the Scholarship Chairman • The Scholarship Chairman oversees the Scholarship Committee • Per Constitution & Bylaws, The Scholarship Committee shall: • Meet at least once every two weeks throughout the year in order to orchestrate all forms of academic programming for the chapter • Create and maintain a written scholarship program • Recruit and act as liaison to chapter’s Academic Coach Create and maintain a Chapter Code of Conduct that is approved by a majority of the chapter • Develop and implement a four-year member retention/education program
Theta Pi Scholarship Program • Show where to locate the scholarship program • Academic Assistance • Assigned study hours • Scheduling of a tutor • Registering student through tutoring program • Incentives • Highest GPA: $50 gift card • Highest improved GPA: $25 gift card • Any member with a semester GPA of 3.0 or higher will be included in a chapter sponsored event • Member with most study hours: $50 discount on dues • Academic Punishments • Standards board
GPA • To be a member on good standing: • You must maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 or attain a semester GPA of 2.5 or above for the previous semester of being enrolled as a full time student. • Members on bad standing are defined as: • Those who do not maintain either a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5, or attain a semester GPA of 2.5 or above. • You also must have a minimum 2.5 GPA in order to: • Receive a bid from Pi Kappa Phi • Become initiated into Pi Kappa Phi • Serve on the Executive Council
Impact of individual GPA on the Chapter • Individual GPA can effect the chapter’s overall GPA greatly • Poor chapter GPA can result in “bad standing” with IFC
IFC Scholarship Requirements • IFC requires a chapter GPA of 2.5 to be on good standing • IFC member fraternities below a 2.5 GPA will be referred to judicial board. Possible punishments include: • Loss of social privileges • Loss of intramural privileges • Mandatory chapter study hours • Mandatory academic workshops • Bi-weekly grade checks and updates
