  2. Placement or arrangement of visual elements in a work of art or a photograph. Composition

  3. Placement or arrangement of visual elements in a work of art or a photograph. • Organization of the elements of art according to the principles of art. Composition

  4. Placement or arrangement of visual elements in a work of art or a photograph. • Organization of the elements of art according to the principles of art. • The term composition means 'putting together,' and can apply to any work of art, from music to writing to photography, that is arranged or put together using conscious thought. Composition

  5. Principles • Emphasis - (Center of Interest or focal point) It is about dominance and influence. Most artists put it a bit off center and balance it with some minor themes to maintain our interest. Some artists avoid emphasis on purpose. They want all parts of the work to be equally interesting.  • (The viewer's eye ultimately wants to rest of the "most important" thing or focal point in the painting, otherwise the eye feels lost, wandering around in space.)

  6. A successful composition draws in the viewer and pulls their eye across the whole work so that everything is taken in and finally settles on the main subject. Composition

  7. What is the focal point of this painting?

  8. Even when composition is complex, everything appears to fit with everything else. • All elements in the composition have a purpose in terms of content and aesthetics. Harmony

  9. Symmetrical arrangement adds a sense of calm (static). • Asymmetrical arrangement creates a sense of unease, imbalance (dynamic). Symmetry

  10. When nothing distracts from the whole, you have unity. • Can be calming and evocative (or boring). Unity

  11. Contrasting visual concepts or elements. • Can be interesting and dynamic (or disturbing/confusing) Oppostition

  12. Picture frame is divided in to three parts horizontally and vertically. • The main subject is placed in one of the four locations where the lines intersect: Rule of Thirds

  13. Point of interest is placed on horizontal “thirds” (dynamic) Point of interest is centered in the composition (static)

  14. Mathematic ratio widely regarded to give balance and harmonious proportions. • Size of elements reduces by half each time: Golden Ratio

  15. Emotional responses and associations • Angry colors? • Sad colors? Color

  16. The area surrounding the image is the ground (negative space), while the image itself is the figure (positive space). Negative and positive space
