Life in a Warmer World An Earth Science Model • Global warming is the worldwide increase in temperature • Over the last 100 years the Earth’s average temperature has risen 0.5 degrees C • The polar ice caps would melt • There would be more rain do to the extra water released by the polar ice caps • Sea levels would rise do to the melting of ice
Types of Scientific Models • Modelsare representations of objects or systems • Physical Models are models you can touch • Mathematical Models uses mathematical equations to predict the out come of something • Example: Meteorologists use mathematical models to predict the weather • The only way to measure the effectiveness of a mathematical model is to compare its prediction with the actual event
Types of Scientific Models • Conceptual Models is a mental image of an object, system, or process • This type of model takes form of a theory (A theory is a unifying explanation for a broad range of hypothesis and observations that have been supported by testing) • Example: Atomic theory can be thought of as a conceptual model
