  1. Health is a Spiritual Matter Almost all faith traditions include teachings about the relationship between physical health and spirituality. • I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. Holy Bible (Romans 12:1) • To keep the body in good health is a duty... otherwise we shall not be able to keep our mind strong and clear. Buddha

  2. The part can never be well unless the whole is well. Plato • He who takes medicine and neglects to diet wastes the skill of his doctors. Chinese Proverb • Those who eat too much or eat too little, who sleep too much or sleep too little, will not succeed in meditation. But those who are temperate in eating and sleeping, work and recreation, will come to the end of sorrow through meditation. Bhagavad Gita

  3. Why is Health a Spiritual Matter? From a Christian perspective, the Bible has much to say to believers. • Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God and you are not your own? For you were bought with a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s. (1 Corinthian 6 :19-20) • OWNERSHIP: Believers were bought with a price, they belong to God, and their bodies are the temple of the Holy Spirit. • Moreover it is required in stewards that one be found faithful. (1 Corinthians 4:2) • STEWARDSHIP: Believers must faithfully steward all that God has given them, including their physical bodies.

  4. But I discipline my body and bring it into subjection, lest, when I have preached to others, I myself should become disqualified. (1 Corinthians 9:27) • DISCIPLINE: Disciplining one’s body is part of walking in faith. • I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God which is your reasonable service. And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God. (Romans 12: 1-2) • CHOICE: Believers are asked to present their bodies as living sacrifices to God, and to choose to align their thinking with God’s ways not ways of the world.

  5. Health Matters Scriptures • Beloved, I pray that you may prosper in all things and be in health, just as your soul prospers. (3 John 2) • My son, do not forget my law but let your heart keep my commands, for length of days and long life and peace they will add to you. (Proverbs 3:1-2) • Do not be wise in your own eyes; fear the LORD and depart from evil. It will be health to your flesh and strength to your bones.(Proverbs 3:7-8)

  6. The Science of Faith and Health Scientific research confirms that a healthier spiritual life is related to a healthier physical, mental, and emotional life.

  7. The Connection Between Health and Faith • Thirty-seven percent of community members went to church at least monthly. Church attendance was associated with an increased likelihood of positive health care practices by 20% to 80%. • Conclusion: Church attendance is an important correlate of positive health care practices, especially for the most vulnerable subgroups, the uninsured and chronically ill. Churches and other faith-based organizations should be seen as valuable sites for health promotion efforts that can help improve the health of low-income and minority populations. Felix Aaron, K., Levine, D., & Burstin, H. R. (2003). African American church participation and health care practices. Journal of General Internal Medicine, 18(11), 908-913.

  8. Spirituality and Health • The authors hypothesized that religious commitment may improve stress control by offering better coping mechanisms, richer social support, and the strength of personal values and worldview. • Patients who are spiritual may utilize their beliefs in coping with illness, pain, and life stresses. Some studies indicate that those who are spiritual tend to have a more positive outlook and therefore a better quality of life. • Some studies have also looked at the role of spirituality regarding pain. One study showed that spiritual well-being was related to the ability to enjoy life even in the midst of difficult symptoms, including pain. • Spiritual commitment tends to enhance recovery from illness and surgery. For example, a study of heart transplant patients showed that those who participated in religious activities and said their beliefs were important complied better with follow-up treatment, had improved physical functioning at the 12-month follow-up visit, had higher levels of self-esteem, and had less anxiety and fewer health worries Puchalski, C. M. (2001). The role of spirituality in health care. Proceedings (Baylor University. Medical Center), 14(4), 352.

  9. Faith and Substance Abuse Recovery • The results of this investigation found that among individuals recovering from addictions, the core belief systems and behaviors associated with religious faith and spirituality were related to positive mental health outcomes. • It may be that religious and spiritual orientations bolster recovering individuals' optimism, social support, and resilience to stress, while reducing feelings of anxiety; but these findings are tentative due to the correlational nature of this study. This study represents a preliminary step in determining how religion and spirituality can assist in the treatment of chemical addictions.  Pardini, D.A., Plante, T.G., Sherman, A., & Stump, J.E., (2000). Religious faith and spirituality in substance abuse recovery: Determining the mental health benefits, 19(4),

  10. The Science of Faith and Health Short Term: Faith based health promotion has been proven to be effective at improving health outcomes for many different illnesses, including cancer, diabetes, cardiovascular disease and HIV/AIDS. (Williams, Gorman, Hankerson 2014) Long Term: Health ministries are a more long-term sustainable solution for promoting health within religious organizations. Embedded ministries can help spread knowledge, change health habits, and encourage discussion focused on health within families. (Austin, Harris 2010)
