  3. 1: Internet Explorer • Microsoft's lovely, secure and fully standards compliant web browser • Some websites just don't work in the evil, communist Firefox

Internet Explorer (ctd...) • Solution: Ies4Linux (http://www.tatanka.com.br/ies4linux/page/Main_Page) • Requirements: • WINE: runs inside a dedicated WINE box for security • Installation: 4 easy steps • Advantages: • IE Only Sites in Linux • Testing for web designers • Running all the spyware you know and love!

  5. 2: All My Files on NTFS • So you've collected all of these (completely legal!) • music • movies (no no, like movies you watch in public! ITS NOT PORN!!) • pictures • games • eBooks • But it's all on NTFS!

  6. NTFS (ctd...) • Solution: NTFS-3G • Requirements: • a Linux kernel (... if you have Linux, you have one...) • Installation: • On [X,K]?Ubuntu: apt-get install ntfs-3g • Elsewhere, download, ./configure, make, make install • Advantages: • All your files Just Work(TM)

  7. 3: Media Player • So you are addicted to Windows Media Player, or maybe even Winamp (you rogue you) • You just can't live without music (okay, so maybe you should seek help, but piracy is so much cheaper!)

  8. Media Player • Solution: Amarok Media Player (http://amarok.kde.org/) • Requirements: • KDE. If you don't have KDE, follow instructions here to install the minimum requirements:http://www.fugitivethought.com/projects/amarokcompile/ • Sound drivers (Xine engine, ALSA, etc) • Advantages: • Fast and intuitive “Collection” interface • Dockable in the “tray” • Awesome “Suggested Mix” feature!

  9. 4: My iPod! • You just paid $300 for this beautiful, super hard to scratch, theft-proof, hard to lose, hunk of..... well.... iPod! • or maybe some other media player • If that other media player is a Zune, please leave now • Apple has you locked in iTunes.... but iTunes is NOT available for Linux! :'(

  10. My iPod (ctd...) • Solution:AMAROK! • Requirements: • that you remember how to go back 2 slides..... • Advantages: • interfaces directly, no extra software • fast, easy to use, no DRM restrictions

  11. 5: DC++ • Peer-2-Peer has completely legitimate uses • ACM Only Supports the completely legitimate uses! • So use these instructions only for downloading new Open Source ISO's and other works that have been placed in public domain • or else.... we'll send you a mean email!

DC++ (ctd...) • Requirements: • the easiest way to install in Ubuntu is with Automatix (http://getautomatix.com/). • Install automatix via web-site instructions, then use it to install DC++ • Advantages: • interface almost exactly the same as windows version • can read all of your legal linux ISO's stored on your NTFS partitions if you read reason #2!

  14. 6: All My Movies • So you happen to have all of these movies lying around your computer.... • because you were bored one day and decided to make “backup” copies of all of those DVD's you purchased legally • and those ones that look like a camera version.... you made the backup using a camera! DUH!

All My Movies (ctd...) • Solution: Kaffeine or Mplayer or VLC • Requirements: • either one (or both!) can be installed through apt-get or by going to their respective websites and downloading • http://kaffeine.sourceforge.net/ • http://www.mplayerhq.hu/design7/news.html • http://www.videolan.org/vlc/ • Advantages • VLC has all codecs built in! • All of them play movies just as well as media player.... maybe even better!

  17. 7: Email • But, but, but... Email! I need email! • Solution: Thunderbird • Requirements: X11 or XGL • Advantages: • same lovely interfaceyou used in windows(you DID use it inwindows didn't you?!) • IMAP integration tohuskymail

  18. 8: My Programming HW • So you just so happen to be enrolled in CSE 123, 133, 134, 244, 258, or something else that requires that you (*gasp*) actually code! • Or maybe you're just really nerdy and code for no reason • How can anybody expect to be productive in Linux? M$ Wind0ze is t3h ul7im473 c0ding 0S!!!

Programming HW (ctd...) • Solution 1: Eclipse • Requirements: X11 or something to show windows on your screen.... • download it from http://eclipse.org • easy to install • * Note: ubuntu users, just apt-get install it • Advantages: • C/C++ support as well as thesame Java support it giveswindows users

  20. Programming HW (ctd...) • Solution 2: Kdevelop • Requirements: • base KDE libraries • GCC, G++, whatever other compilers you want • Advantages: • lots of templates for GUI programs, console applications, etc. • specialized IDEs for manylanguages

  21. 9: My $1000 Alarm Clock • But I use my computer as an alarm clock to wake me up in the morning! Surely Linux can't be THAT advanced! • (okay, so maybe Justin is the only one that does that...)

  22. $1000 Alarm Clock (ctd...) • Solution: XMMS and the Alarm Clock Plugin! • Requirements: • Install XMMS (http://www.xmms.org) • Install the XMMS alarm plugin (http://www.xmms.org/plugins.php?details=7) • Open a song in XMMS, then go to the menu->Options->Preferences, and then the General Plugins, and set your time • Advantages: • No sleeping through classes!

  24. 10: Remote Desktop • Alright, so you got me on all of those... but I bet Linux doesn't have a Remote Desktop program as secure and fast as Remote Desktop Connection so I can play my completely legal music from work! • You're right....

Remote Desktop (ctd...) • Linux equivalents are just as fast and easy, but MUCH MORE secure! • Solution: FreeNX • Requirements: • download it from http://www.nomachine.com • make sure you have SSH (http://www.openssh.org) daemon running • run /usr/NX/bin/nxserver as root • Advantages: • encrypted via SSH, runs on same port as SSH • supports Multimedia Extensions
