  2. 1. What is a watershed? • A watershed is a region drained by, or one that contributes water to, a stream, lake, or other body of water.

  3. 2. How are watersheds separated from one another? • Watersheds are separated by topographic highs called divides.

  4. 3. How many watersheds are identified by the PA State Water Plan? • 104 watersheds

  5. 4. Name PA’s 5 major watersheds and the main rivers that drain each. • The Great Lakes Basin is divided into 2 sub-basins: the Erie Basin & the Genesee basin. Some major streams in the Erie Basin are Conneaut, Elk, & Walnut Creeks, all of which drain north into Lake Erie. The Genesee Basin’s major tributary is the Genesee R., which flows into Lake Ontario.

  6. 4. Name PA’s 5 major watersheds and the main rivers that drain each. • The Ohio R. Basin’s major rivers include the Ohio, Allegheny, & Monongahela Rivers.

  7. 4. Name PA’s 5 major watersheds and the main rivers that drain each. • The Susquehanna R./Chesapeake Bay Basin’s largest river is the Susquehanna. Major tributaries of the Susquehanna R. in the Commonwealth include the Lackawanna, Conestoga, West Branch Susquehanna, & Juniata Rivers.

  8. 4. Name PA’s 5 major watersheds and the main rivers that drain each. • The Potomac Basin’s tributaries to the Potomac R. include the Shenandoah R. & the Marsh, Wills, Tonoloway, Licking, Rock, Conococheague, & Antietam Creeks.

  12. 7. Identify the watershed in which you live. Write a paragraph or two describing the major creeks, streams, & rivers that drain the watershed. • We live in the Ohio R. Basin. • Al., Mon., O., Yough. Rivers, Chartiers Creek, etc.?
