  5. Math Standards Our Year Long Standards of Focus: 1. Students will learn addition and subtractions with 20 to solve word problems. 2. Students will learn to add and subtract within 20, demonstrating fluency for addition and subtractions within 10. Trimester 1 Represent and Interpret Graphs Geometry, Telling Time and Fractions Trimester 2 Measurement Place Value Trimester 3 Addition and subtraction to 100 Fact Families

Writing Standards • Write Opinion Pieces • Write Informative/Explanatory Texts • Write Narratives • Mastery is expected at the end of the year. • Language • Demonstrate effective use of the English grammar. • Demonstrate correct use of standard English, use appropriate capitalization, punctuation and spelling skills. • Acquire and use grade-appropriate vocabulary and topic-specific words and phrases, including precise words which describe actions, emotions, and experiences.

Reading Standards • Learn Phonics Patterns and Sight Words • Develop Comprehension Skills when Reading Fiction and Informational Texts • Ask and answer questions about key details in a text • Retell stories to include key details in a text • Read fiction and informational books and know the differences and similarities between the two kinds of texts. 4. Weekly Homework Homework consists of: • Individualized math timed practice tests (Panther Facts) • Individualized reading and spelling word club levels • Individualized reading book bags • Reading log • Optional computer games and activities • Spelling dictation sentences Homework is due on Thursdays.

  10. Panther Timed Math Tests These are a series of math tests that builds fluency skills. Lion Cubs This club focuses on addition and subtraction math facts to 20. There are four timed tests. Tigers Club This is a more advanced club consisting of four timed tests covering addition, subtraction and multiplication facts ( 2’s, 5’s and 10’s).

  11. 200 Word Club Words This is a first grade individualized reading and spelling program focusing on common sight words. • Our trained parent volunteers run this program. • Your child’s reading and spelling levels will be recorded each week on their homework cover sheet. • For those who enjoy a challenge, we will learn the 400 Word Club words!

  12. Important Highlights: • Please send a healthy snack for recess. • Wear comfortable shoes on our P.E. days Mondays, Thursdays, and every other Wednesday. • Homework is important. Please make sure it’s returned on Thursdays. • I have duty immediately after school. I can meet with you afterwards by a prearranged appointment. • Thursday Envelopes: Please read and return the envelopes every Friday. • Dreambox and Tenmarksare two math computer programs that are to you at home.
