  1. Evidence of Evolution Unit 6: Seventh Grade

  2. The Details • 4 weeks in duration • CDA (last one!)will be after CRCTs • Expect a quiz every 1.5- 2 weeks • Several inquiry labs --- you are given a question to answer • Several hands-on activities • At least one choice-based activity • No official project with this unit

  3. Overview of Unit • You will be examining the evidence of evolution of living organisms. • Inherited Characteristics • Natural Selection • You will be investigating the survival of organisms and their successive generations • Inherited Characteristics • Adaptations • You will use the fossil record found in sedimentary rock to support evidence of evolution

  4. By the end of this unit you should be able to: • Explain that physical characteristics of organisms have changed over successive generations • Describe ways in which species on Earth have evolved due to natural selection • Trace evidence that the fossil record found in sedimentary rock provides evidence for the long history of changing life forms

  5. Essential Questions • How do physical characteristics of organisms demonstrate/support the theory of evolution? • How does natural selection affect the evolution of species on Earth? • How does the fossil record provide evidence of evolution?

  6. Misconceptions about evolution • Evolution means “man from monkey” • Evolution no longer occurs • Evolution is only a theory • Fossils are only found in sedimentary rocks • Evolution is an origin of life/a belief system • Evolution is something an organism does on purpose • Individual organisms change to meet the needs of their environment

  7. Goal Setting • Think about Unit 6’s topics and essential questions • Do you find this topic easy to understand? • Do you find this topic interesting? • Do you feel that you will do well during this unit? • On your goal sheet, fill in set a goal for yourself • Minimum of a 75%, but challenge yourself! • List three things YOU can do to help ensure your reaching this goal. • List 3 obstacles you may face while trying to meet your goal and a solution for each problem
