WHY RTI? • Early Identification – Intervention vs. remediation • Struggling adolescent learners require support to be successful in middle and high school • Without the proper support – Dropouts • In middle and high – RTI targets academic and behavior support that focuses on skills & content needed to graduate

  4. Warm Up Activity • Write a short paragraph (5 sentences) describing your car, but you can not use the letters R,T, I. • Using your non-dominant hand, write a paragraph about what you did over the weekend. • What made the tasks easy/hard for you?

  5. Components of RTI • Progress Monitoring – Entry/Exit criteria • Screening • Multi Level Prevention -Strategies for achieving academic outcomes and meeting social/behavioral expectations using evidence – based interventions • Data – based decision making and using the results

  6. Important Points to Remember • High Quality Instruction • Research-basedcore instruction • General Ed. classroom instruction to maximum extent • Rigorous direct Instruction at all tiers • Universal Screening – Norm-referenced screening measures • Multiple screenings vs. one time screening or false positives vs. false negatives • Progress monitoring is essential – CBMs • Effective interventions are linked to assessment information • Fidelity - Not an option
