  1. Life in an Ocean

  2. Life in an Ocean • What is an ocean like? • The ocean is the Earths largest biome. An ocean is a large body of salt water. There are five connected oceans, the Atlantic, Pacific, Indian, Arctic and Southern. The Pacific is the largest of the oceans covering 1/3 of the planet.

  3. Life in an Ocean • What is an Ocean like? • Billions of living things are in the ocean. Most marine life lives in shallow water, the bottom of the ocean is too cold and dark to support much life.

  4. Life in an Ocean

  5. Life in an Ocean • How do plants survive in the ocean? • Most ocean plants are not true plants they are algae. Algae are plant like living things. Algae comes in two main types. The first lives in shallow water and has a root like structure that attaches to the ocean floor. The other floats or drifts near the sunlit surface. Both have adapted to survive in salty water.

  6. Life in an Ocean • What are kelp forests? • Kelp forests are a type of algae that grow together in huge groups in shallow waters. Kelp has leaf like structures that take in sunlight. Kelp has bladders that help it float. Kelp forest are home to many animals such as sea urchins and sea otters.

  7. Life in the Ocean • How do animals survive under water? • Animals such as fish use gills to help them breathe underwater. Gills are located on both sides of the body behind the fish’s head. Water goes into the fish’s mouth and passes through the gills taking in the oxygen as water passes out.

  8. Life in the Ocean • How do animals stay safe in the ocean? • Animals like the stingray have defensive adaptions to help keep them safe. The stingray has a sharp poisonous tail that it can use to defend itself. Stingrays also use the sand as camouflage when they sense danger.

  9. Life in the Ocean • How do animals survive in the deep ocean? • The bottom of the ocean is cold and dark, only animals with special adaptations can survive there. The viperfish has giant eyes and the giant squid has eyes as big as volleyballs. Both these adaptations help them survive in little to no light.

  10. Life in the Ocean • Another deep water fish is the angler fish, the angler fish has a different adaptation that helps it get food. It has a growth on the top of its head that glows. This glow attracts prey, when they get close the angler fish attacks.
