  5. KAPPA SIGMA FRATERNITY CODE OF CONDUCT Membership in Kappa Sigma is a privilege. Each member, pledge or initiate, undergraduate and alumnus, is bound by this Code of Conduct.

  6. KAPPA SIGMA FRATERNITY CODE OF CONDUCT Each member of Kappa Sigma Fraternity is responsible for seeing that he: • Acts as a gentleman, setting an example of moral behavior; • Conducts himself as a good student, good neighbor, and good citizen; • Obeys the laws, rules and regulations of his country, state or province, city and county, and college or university; • Understands and abides by the Constitution, By-Laws and Rules of Kappa Sigma Fraternity, including the Standards of Conduct, the acts and resolutions of Grand Conclaves, and his chapter’s by-laws; and • Does not engage in, permit or tolerate hazing , or the unlawful use of alcohol or possession of controlled substances; When the Fraternity finds that any member fails or refuses to abide by this Code of Conduct, the Fraternity may take such actions as permitted in the Constitution, By-Laws and Rules up to and including removing the individual from membership in Kappa Sigma Fraternity.

Substance Abuse “...is a maladaptive pattern of substance abuse indicated by continued use despite of persistence social, occupational or physical problems caused by the use of the substance or by recurrent use when such use is hazardous.” *Definition for substance abuse according to The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-IV-TR)

Substance Abuse Characteristics • Frequent occupation with seeking or taking substances • Substance often taken in larger amounts or over a longer period of time than intended • Increased tolerance • Characteristic withdrawal symptoms • Relief substance use • Persistent desire or repeated efforts to cut down or control substance use

Substance Abuse Characteristics • Frequent intoxication or impairment by substance use when expected to fulfill social or occupational obligations • Important social, occupational, or recreational activities sacrificed in order to seek or take the substance • Continuation of substance use despite a significant social or legal problem or a physical disorder that the individual knows is exacerbated by substance use

Drug Use • 24.9% used Marijuana this year • 13.9% are current users • 7.4% use other drug • 3.8% use amphetamines • 1.8% use designer versions (XTC) • 42.7% involved in public misconduct (fight, DUI) • 28.5% experience personal problems (suicidal, injury, sexual assault) • Of 17.2% of population using drugs: • Athletes 19.4% - Fraternities/ Sororities 26.4% • IM Sports 18.1% - Student Government 13.9% • Minority 20.2%

Dating Violence • 32% of individuals dating have been exposed to a form of violence • 27.1% of college women are sexually assaulted • 82.7% were assaulted by an acquaintance • 67.5% of the offenders were drinking • 47.6% of perpetrators of sexual assault were in a fraternity (when less than 10% of men on campus belong to a fraternity)

Dating Violence Characteristics • Maintains a temper • Abuse of alcohol and drugs • Shows extreme jealousy • Becomes enraged when he believes he is not being heard • Obsessed with girlfriend’s time and whereabouts • Constantly following and watching her • Has been verbally abusive • Has been physically abusive

  16. Date Rape Characteristics • Heavy alcohol and drug use • Acceptance of dating violence • Adversarial attitude about relationships • Assumption of role in relationship • Degrading language regarding women • Gets hostile when he is told “no”

Mental Health In regard to campus health centers: • 89% had to hospitalize a student for psychological reasons • 10% reported a student suicide • 24% gave a Tarasoff warning to a third party regarding a potentially dangerous client • 60% reported obsessive pursuit cases (stalking) • 58% reported Eating Disorders • 42% reported Drug Abuse • 35% reported Alcohol Abuse • 44% reported Classroom Disruption • 25% reported Gambling • 23% reported Suicide Attempts • 5% of college students prematurely end their education due to psychiatric disorders

Mental Health Characteristics Depression • disturbed mood • fatigue and low energy • sleep and eating problems • impaired concentration, memory, decision-making • motivation drops and lower self-esteem • loss of interest in normal activities • isolation and social withdrawal • in some cases suicidal or homicidal thoughts

  19. Mental Health Characteristics Anxiety • exaggerated worry and tension, even though there is little or nothing to provoke it • always anticipating disaster • often worrying excessively about health, money, family, or work • Sometimes, though, the source of the worry is hard to pinpoint
