YOUTH SYNERGY BY CHUDE JIDEONWO
THIS IS MY LIFE: • My life’s work over the years has always been centred on three things: • Connector: Linking people, especially young people with opportunities. • Capacity Builder: Building capacity for my generation in enterprise. • Change Agent: Using media as a tool for positive change and upward growth.
THE POWER OF THE MEDIA: Our three organisations (Y!, RED and The Future project) believe in and are extremely passionate about the capacity of the media to transform society and people. In brief: Y! is media content. RED is media and communication. The Future Project is media for development.
RUBBIN MINDS: • Our flagship TV program which shows on Channels TV • RubbinMinds was created to meet a very important need. • Before Rubbin Minds, there was no show aside (entertainment, sports or fashion shows,) which gave voice to the concerns and aspirations of young people. • The 1st TV show where young people come around to discuss the economy, polity, politics, and other topical issues of the day.
Y! MAGAZINE: “The best way to hide something from a black man is to put it in a book.” – Lewis Michaux (Proprietor of the African National Memorial Bookstore). “If I can get a black person to read, I can change their life.” – Black Nationalist’s exhortation. • Y! was born to dispel the perception that Nigerians, especially young people, don’t read anything if it isn’t the usual fare of entertainment, sports and fashion. • Y! uses the media to provoke thought, inspire action and stimulate growth. • Y! stubbornly insists on presenting issues-based features and spotlighting a new breed of young Nigerians you wouldn’t normally find on Nigerian magazines.
YOUNG AND NIGERIAN (Y&N): Y&N is our weekly feature on the Sunday Guardian. We interview & profile young people outside entertainment and fashion in a mainstream/traditional paper. We don’t have a problem with young people expressing their talents in fashion, entertainment or sports, but we believe that that need has been sufficiently met.
ENOUGH IS ENOUGH (EIE): • The EiEstory - • A coalition of individuals and youth-led organisations committed to instituting a culture of good governance and public accountability in Nigeria • We latch on the power of the media to channel the collective angst of our generation and launch an underground coalition of change makers.
THE FUTURE AWARDS: The Future Awards was birthed out of a belief in the power of strong positive images in a society like Nigeria. These images serve as models to inspire hope and arouse in young Nigerians, a belief in themselves. We strongly believe that true change for Nigeria goes beyond just digging boreholes or distributing tricycles. To create real change, you must change the minds of the people; you must make them have faith that everything they can imagine is possible in this country.
THE FUTURE ENTERPRISE SUPPORT SCHEME: Nigeria doesn’t just have an unemployment issue, it has an unemployability issue. Many young people lack the necessary skills and knowledge base needed to pursue their passions and purpose in life. We organise trainings in photography, entrepreneurship, writing etc. We also organise master classes.
Ynaija.com: • This is our online newspaper. • The one stop shop for issues, opinions and analysis. • Ynaija.com provides platform for different shades of opinions. Ideas. Opinion. Issues. Culture. Columns. Breaking News.
TFA SYMPOSIUM: A unique forum for young Nigerians across sectors to tackle pressing leadership questions and chart a practical course for how we intend to do better than those before us.
Journalism: My work as a journalist has been what many might call developmental journalism. Examples- • Spotlight on trans-atlantic human trafficking for Mania magazine; celebrating the giant strides of Nigerian musicians in the UK Guardian. • It’s about telling the stories that make impact.
RED MEDIA: Red media is a practical demonstration of just how far the media can drive anything and any cause. Ranging from the dreams of young people (Nigerian idol), the launch of exciting technology (Google plus), the aspiration of a voting nation (Reclaim Naija), the lifestyle of a new generation (Blackberry), or a government trying to reach its people (Ministry of Finance).
STRAT 2025: Strat 2025is the vision we had when we began our organization. “By 2025, we’ll raise a set of young Nigerians who are ready and have the capacity to build a greater Nigeria.”
COLLABORATIONS AND PARTNERSHIPS: NLI. British council. KelechiAmadistudio. US government. Every time we collaborate we are always thinking about one thing: developing capacity of young people for leadership and enterprise.
FINAL WORDS: There is no finish line. There is no grand accomplishment. The success is in each milestone, whether big or small. No one person will change the world but by God we are determined to move it in direction we desire.
