Based on interview with … • Sven Sterken Lecturer & researcher in architectural and urban history
City • Rich people = escaped from city Lots of noise Compact • The poor people stayed in the city. They didn’t have enough money to build their own houses.
Countryside • Rich people • People neglected their houses New villas, bungalows • Vertical houses with open spaces = residential landscape
Apartments • Situated next to highway = practical • Huge buildings with lots of little apartments Since the 60’s, people had to live smaller
Prosperity bomb in the 60’s • Economic = rise • People became rich = individualistic • Every family had his own house (nearby city + detached house)
Now… • “Your house lives longer than you…” • Sustainability • Isolation • Safety
Materials … • Floor plan except for the floor plan, the family could choose how they wanted their house • Before: - whiteblocks in plaster - houses built in a very short time • Now: - bricks - it takes a long time tobuild a house
Home styling now • Farmhousestyle • Modern houses • The style of the 60’s has completelydisappeared (Except for folding doors and big windows )
Modern house Farmhouse Before renovation After renovation
Garage • The lounge for the car • Really large room
Kitchen In the 60’s • Practical reason • They didn’t spend a lot of time in it • They ate in the dining room NOT in the kitchen • Important objects:- dishwasher - cooker- cooker hood Now • Central place of the house • We eat in the kitchen OR dining room
Living room In the 60’s • Kitchen and living room are two separated rooms • Central place of the house • On the first floor view of the garden Now • The living room is extended with the kitchen
