  6. Peter’s Work  At age 44 Peter was honored by Tsar Alexander III (king of Russia) with a rank of nobility and a lifetime pension.  In his lifetime, Peter wrote 10 Operas 6 Symphonies 4 Concertos ...and the music for 3 famous ballets: Swan Lake, Sleeping Beauty and The Nutcracker

  7. Swan Lake

  8. Sleeping Beauty – Charles Perrault

  9. Boarding School & Music School – Slide 4 When he was 8, Peter’s whole family moved from Votkinsk (near Perm) to St. Petersburg and when he was an adult he moved to Moscow, the capital of Russia. (show cities on map) Peter was a very sensitive child. He would get his feelings hurt easily and had a lot of imagination. He heard music in his head and even everyday sounds such as galloping horses sounded like music to him. All that music in his head would often keep him awake at night. This sensitivity was Peter's greatest gift as it allowed him to feel deeply and he was able to put those feelings into an art form, in his case music, for other people to enjoy and relate to.  Even though Peter was always thinking about music when he grew up, his parents wanted him to become a lawyer, so they enrolled him in a special boarding school when he was ten years old. (Ask children if they know what a boarding school is – close discussion by telling them that instead of going to a middle school such as Canyon Vista, Peter was off on his own at boarding school) His parents did not visit him often, but Peter did well in school and graduated at age 21 as a lawyer. He got a job in a government office after he graduated, but when a new music school opened up in St. Petersburg he enrolled. The school was founded by people who wanted Russia to produce their own music and have Russian composers so it was a very good time for Tchaikovsky to become a composer. Later on another new music school opened in the capital city of Moscow and Tchaikovsky moved there to teach and continue to learn about music.

  10. Winter Dreams – Slide 5 Peter worked so hard on his music that sometimes he made himself sick. He worked day and night when he was writing his first symphony “Winter Dreams”. (Play video) Peter was a Romantic composer, as he had the ability to express feelings and images through music. Some people liked this a lot and others did not care for it. In any case he did not make a lot of money composing music until a rich lady named Madam Nadezha von Meck got in touch with him because she liked his music so much that she wanted him to be able to work on it without having to worry about money. She agreed to give Peter money every year but insisted they never met face-to-face. They became best friends by writing letters to each other, and Peter dedicated a symphony to Madam von Meck to show how grateful he was. Because Peter had some more money now he was able to travel to get inspiration in other countries as well as discover new instruments. He smuggled a newly invented instrument called the Celesta out of Paris in France because he wanted to become the first composer to use the celesta. We can hear the bell-sound of the Celesta in the “Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy”.
