  3. Biography: Childhood • Born on May 7, 1840 in Votkinsk in Viatka Province • Son of a successful engineer • Early interest in music • Death of mother, age 14

  4. Biography: Introduction to Music • Attended law school in St. Petersburg • Took miserable job as clerk • Met Anton and Nikolai Rubinstein (brothers) • Second to Franz Liszt • Opened Russia's first conservatory • Sponsorship of the Imperial Russian Music Society • First composition student

  5. Early Works • “Well made but not memorable” • Forced to support self through earnings from conservatory • Began to establish distinguished style • Communication between Tchaikovsky, Rubinsteins and “Mighty Five” • Ballet: Swan Lake (1876)

  6. Failed Marriage • Social view on homosexuality • Married AntoninaMiliukovain 1877 • Became mentally ill and died in 1917 • Rejected by Peter, criticized by brother • Within a few weeks he had fled Moscow
