  2. Scientific Name: UrsusMaritimus

  3. The polar bears main habitat is on offshore pack ice, and along costs and island of the Arctic region. • Over 40 percent of all polar bears living today live in Northern Canada, on packed ice and along the shores of the many island there. • Polar bears prefer the ice packs to other parts of their habitat because it allows them to remain in close contact with their main food source, Seals.

  4. The polar bear's body requires a diet based on large amounts of seal fat • They are the most carnivorous member of the bear family • Polar Bear’s main source of food is the ringed seal which leads a solitary life polar bears are also forced to become solitary creatures too • Since the amount of food available varies greatly throughout the year, polar bears often have to fast for several months • When they get too hungry, both sexes can turn into cannibals

  5. The chief threat to the polar bear is the loss of its sea ice habitat due to global warming • the polar bear is actually a marine mammal that spends far more time at sea than it does on land • The Polar bear was added to the endangered species list in the 1970s • The polar bear population has significantly improved, The World Wildlife Federation estimates that as of 2013, the population is between 20,000 and 25,000 • Despite that improvement, this species is still officially classified as "threatened" or "vulnerable," which is only one step up from endangered.

  6. Review 1.) What year was the polar bear added to the endangered species list? 2.) What is the polar bear’s diet mainly based on? 3.) How many polar bears are estimated to be left (Range)? 4.) Why do polar bears fast for sometimes several months? 5.) Will polar bears become cannibalistic when hungry?
