  1. The History of the Cartesian System of Graphing History of Cartesian Graph-N.C.-3

  2. Cartesian System of Graphing • Cartesian means relating to the French philosopher and mathematician Rene Descartes which is Latin for Cartesius. • Rene liked to merge algebra and Euclidean geometry! • This work and research is very important to the development of analytic geometry, calculus, and cartography.

  3. Who came up with it?? • Who made it is a mystery in the since that there are two people who have come up with the idea for it. • They are Rene Descartes and Pierre de Fermat. • Rene is the most famous person but it is Pierre who did the most.

  4. Rene and Pierre • Pierre did not publish his discoveries we found out about him through historical evidence. • Rene on the other hand did publish his discoveries. He wrote a book entitled Discourse on the Method of Rightly Conducting One’s Reason and Seeking Truth in Science.

  5. Rene Descartes • Rene was laying in bed one day waiting for his medication (he was very ill) when he noticed two lines on the ceiling one vertical and one horizontal. Then a fly landed on one of the tiles. Rene thought that it would be amazing if they had an exact location for where the fly landed. Thus, the Cartesian System was created!

  6. More Rene Descartes • Rene was the first person to suggest that we should use a point or object pinpointing the exact location on the graph, using the two intersecting lines as the main two lines. Called the Y and X axis.

  7. Pierre de Fermat • Pierre de Fermat did more than Rene Descartes did but he didn’t get as much credit for it. • Pierre was the first person to come up with the general idea of the graph and a little bit later Rene came and embellished it to perfection.

  8. The End • Well that concludes the History of the Cartesian System of Graphing. • Now you know all you need to know about the History of it all. • By: N.C. Period 3
