  1. 10 MINUTE QUIZ A. STUDENTS WHO READ AND ANNOTATED: TAKE READING QUIZ WITH YOUR BOOKS. B. STUDENTS WHO READ AND DID NOT ANNOTATE: TAKE READING WITHOUT YOUR BOOKS. C. STUDENTS WHO DID NOT DO THE READING: TAKE A PLOT SUMMARY SHEET AND READ QUIETLY UNTIL THE QUIZ IS COMPLETE

  2. What do I do if I cannot understand a passage? • Reread (all good readers will have to reread 2,3 times before they fully understand) • Use context clues to make an educated guess. • Look up unfamiliar words. • Ask a classmate/neighbor. • Ask the teacher.

  3. Chapter IX (9)______11.29 Mr. Darcy, Mr. Bingley, Elizabeth, Jane, Miss Bingley, Mr. Bennet, Mrs. Bennet, Lydia In your group (of no more than THREE), pick THREE of these characters to analyze: • find TWO quotations for each character that reveal an aspect of their personality. Share out your responses with your group members. TOMORROW’S READING QUIZ WILL ASK YOU TO USE THESE QUOTATIONS TO ANALYZE THE CHARACTERS IN A PARAGRAPH.

  4. ‘I cannot see that London has any great advantage over the country, for my part, except the shops and public places. The country is a vast deal pleasanter, is it not, Mr. Bingley?’ Modern English: Although cities have more shops and business, the countryside is a better place to live than the city. What is shows: Mrs. Bennet is the type of woman who loves to show herself off- a lot of what she says is “nonsense”- most of the countryside is POOR and definitely NOT pleasant. You can see how hard she is trying to get Mr. Bingley to like Jane.

  5. Independent / Group Work • Stay on task. Groups will be broken up if conversations wander off-task. • If you are reading out loud, be aware of the volume of your voice. • When you are completely done, have Mr. Chen check you off and begin the homework. • Whatever is not finished must be completed for homework, or you will not receive credit for the classwork.

  6. Reading Notes for Chapter 9-10 Chapter IX (9) • Mr. Jones: the pharmacist/doctor who comes to see Jane • countenance: face/personality Chapter X (10) • piquet: a type of card game

  7. Homework (Due Thursday 11.29) • Read Chapter X (10) CAREFULLY. There will be a reading quiz tomorrow. • Annotate the text. If you annotate, you will be allowed to use the book on your reading quiz.

  8. Suggested Annotations Comment: Explain your own opinion about one of the characters/situations Prediction: Make a prediction supported by evidence Question: Ask about something that is confusing or that you are curious about Vocab: Define a word you do not understand (ex: piqued  to be interested in something)
