  1. Afterward The Meaning of Mad Cow

  2. Author’s Intent • This chapter was included in order to go into further detail about the way the fast food corporations handled the emergence of Mad Cow disease. • This section provides insight into and explains many of the aspects of the Mad Cow disease controversy that much of the public was not aware of. • To show how livestock such as cattle is fed and how this can pose a serious threat to the health of those that consume this livestock.

  3. Major Assertions and Findings • Many companies use the offal of animals to feed other animals of the same species. Ex. spines, eyes, bones, and brains of a cow may be used in feed for other cows. • Pet food companies may use the meat of dead cats and dogs in food for cats and dogs. • Mad Cow disease has not been found in American cattle because few cattle in the United States have been tested for the disease.

  4. Points Proved Successfully • The author proved his point very well by backing up all of his statements with factual information and statistics taken from legitimate surveys. Bias • The author is relatively unbiased in his view although some critics have accused him of being too left wing in his writings by making statements about republican policies and avoiding the policies of democrats when related to the fast food industry.

  5. Relevance of Material • This chapter is still relevant today in that it shows the problems the fast food industry has had in the past and how it has dealt with them. • This chapter can still be applied to the policies of many drops in food quality that occur in modern society.
