  1. Joel 2:28-32 (3:1-5), ESV “And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh; your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, and your young men shall see visions.

  2. Even on the male and female servants in those days I will pour out my Spirit.

  3. “And I will show wonders in the heavens and on the earth, blood and fire and columns of smoke.

  4. The sun shall be turned to darkness, and the moon to blood, before the great and awesome day of the Lord comes.

  5. And it shall come to pass that everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved. For in Mount Zion and in Jerusalem there shall be those who escape, as the Lord has said, and among the survivors shall be those whom the Lord calls.

  6. 28, 1 “And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh; your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, and your young men shall see visions.(Joel 2:28, 3:1, ESV)

  9. 32 And it shall come to pass that everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved. For in Mount Zion and in Jerusalem there shall be those who escape, as the Lord has said, and among the survivors shall be those whom the Lord calls. (Joel 2:21, 3:5, ESV)

Main Point • It describes when the restoration is complete • Those who turned in repentance and faith will not only experience physical blessings, but will also know their God • He will pour His Spirit on them • All will experience His Spirit • They will be spared from judgment from the day of the Lord

  11. Application Points • Outpouring of the Spirit • The first place we see is that God is a judging God • This is a good thing • When do we see this occur? When God says, “Which I sent among you” • The events are not random occurrences • God is sovereign over this world • He will use any means to judge evil • Drought, flooding, enemy armies • Why is this a good thing? • From the human perspective, it is hard to see how it would be good for others to suffer or face judgment

  12. 31 “I myself did not know him, but for this purpose I came baptizing with water, that he might be revealed to Israel.” 32 And John bore witness: “I saw the Spirit descend from heaven like a dove, and it remained on him. 33 I myself did not know him, but he who sent me to baptize with water said to me, ‘He on whom you see the Spirit descend and remain, this is he who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.’ 34 And I have seen and have borne witness that this is the Son of God.” (John 1:31-34)

Application Points • Outpouring of the Spirit (2) • John baptized with water for the purpose of repentance (Matt. 3:11) • Yet John’s call was just the beginning • For it was in Jesus that the Spirit Himself would be poured over the people • That is interesting when considering Joel • Consider just how much John Joel was • Both called the people to repentance • Both prophesied two things • God would dwell among their people, and the Spirit of God would be poured out

  14. Application Points • Outpouring of the Spirit (3) • What a great fulfillment • We see what Joel and John prophesied coming to life in Christ • A call to repentance, God coming into their midst, the Spirit being poured out • This is further established by Christ Himself

  15. “16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, 17 even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you.” (John 14:16-17) “Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you.” (John 16:7)

Application Points • Outpouring of the Spirit (4) • We see in Christ is the One who sends the Spirit • Why is this so significant? • The answer is in Joel, for in Joel we are informed that the Spirit is poured out on those who escape judgment • It implies the reality that if Christ does send the Spirit, then judgment is passed over us • The receiving of the Spirit is evidence of these things • Does this ever happen? • Christ talks about the coming Helper • Is there evidence that the Spirit did arrive?

  17. “When the day of Pentecost arrived, they were all together in one place. 2 And suddenly there came from heaven a sound like a mighty rushing wind, and hit filled the entire house where they were sitting. 3 And divided tongues as of fire appeared to them and rested1 on each one of them. 4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues las the Spirit gave them utterance.” (Acts 2:1-4, ESV)

Application Points • Outpouring of the Spirit (5) • At some point we might wonder why this event is documented • But when we read Joel we know the answer • God came into their midst, dwelled among them, and poured out His Spirit • It is not given to all people, but to those who were repentant • Peter recognized the significance of these events and proclaimed

  19. 14 “But Peter, standing with the eleven, lifted up his voice and addressed them: “Men of Judea and all who dwell in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and give ear to my words. 15 For these people are not drunk, as you suppose, since it is only the third hour of the day. 16 But this is what was uttered through the prophet Joel:”(Acts 2:14-16, ESV)

Application Points • Outpouring of the Spirit (6) • What does this then mean? • It means judgment has passed • We often think of the ways of the Spirit, but before we can even go there, we must remember that the Spirit means something significant • It means judgment is no more • It means what Christ proclaimed is truth • But as it is we know the truth • We know the Spirit is with us • How can we know? Consider what Christ tells us

  21. “7 Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you. 8 And when he comes, he will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment: 9 concerning sin, because they do not believe in me; 10 concerning righteousness, because I go to the Father, and you will see me no longer; 11 concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged.

  22. 12 “I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. 13 When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. 14 He will glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you. 15 All that the Father has is mine; therefore I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you. (John 16:7-14).

Application Points • Outpouring of the Spirit (7) • For a long time I wondered how Jesus could say, “It is to your advantage that I go away…” • Why would it be advantageous for us for Christ to go and the Spirit to come? • Well, when we read Joel we understand it means redemption is here • If Christ doesn’t go, then the Spirit doesn’t come, and if the Spirit does not come, then there is no hope for escape from judgment • It means that when the Spirit has arrived, then that judgment will pass over the people who belong to Him

Application Points • Outpouring of the Spirit (8) • We also learn what the Spirit will do • He convicts the world of sin • Those who disbelieve in Christ He convicts • He convicts concerning Righteousness • Through Christ righteousness has come upon us • Christ would never be at the right hand of God unless He was righteous • He also convicts concerning the judgment, for the ruler of the world will be judged, as well as all those who belong to him

Application Points • Outpouring of the Spirit (9) • The Spirit also guides us in the truth • He teaches us, and tells us of Christ • As we learned in I John, we know the Spirit of God because it bears witness to Christ (I John 4:1-6) • But we also learn from Paul the ways of the Spirit in Galatians when he writes

  26. 22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. 24 And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. 25 If we live by the Spirit, let us also keep in step with the Spirit. 26 Let us not become conceited, provoking one another, envying one another. (Galatians 5:22-26, ESV)

  27. Application Points • Outpouring of the Spirit (10) • One of the ways those who are in Christ are seen is that they live a repentant lifestyle • It is made evident when they walk in step with the Spirit • When we live in this way, glorifying God in our lives, we can know we have received the Spirit of God • We see, then, that the Spirit of God teaches us, and guides us in our lives • Yet there is more that the Spirit does, for He also gives us gifts

  28. “4 Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; 5 and there are varieties of service, but the same Lord; 6 and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who empowers them all in everyone. 7 To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good.

  29. 8 For to one is given through the Spirit the utterance of wisdom, and to another the utterance of knowledge according to the same Spirit, 9 to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, 10 to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another the ability to distinguish between spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. 11 All these are empowered by one and the same Spirit, who apportions to each one individually as he wills.” (I Cor. 12:4-11).

Application Points • Outpouring of the Spirit (11) • The Spirit does not give all gifts to everyone • Yet everyone who has gifts are empowered, are given, by the Spirit • The purpose is the common good of believers • It is for our benefit the Spirit manifests Himself within us • Not all these spiritual gifts are considered spiritual gifts today • Often when we discuss spiritual gifts we think of prophecy or tongues • Yet Paul calls wisdom, knowledge, faith. Spiritual gifts • Consider further what Paul says at the end of the chapter

  31. 27 Now you are the body of Christ and individually members of it. 28 And God has appointed in the church first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then miracles, then gifts of healing, helping, administrating, and various kinds of tongues. 29 Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Do all work miracles? 30 Do all possess gifts of healing? Do all speak with tongues? Do all interpret? 31 But earnestly desire the higher gifts.” (I Corinthians 12:27-31, ESV)

  32. Application Points • Outpouring of the Spirit (12) • Notice, there are things we would not normally consider spiritual gifts • Helping, administration • Here they are declared to be spiritual gifts • It should not surprise us to find these here, since the purpose of spiritual gifts is the common good (which these fulfill) • Ultimately Paul goes on to say the most excellent way • The greatest of all spiritual gifts is love • The greatest evidence of the Spirit is love amongst brothers and sisters for each other

  33. Application Points • Outpouring of the Spirit (13) • Some might wonder, though, about prophecy and tongues and if they still occur • Personally, I would say yes • However, these things must also be understood with caution • God is a God of order not disorder • When congregations have all their members speaking in tongues at once it is unbiblical • Technically we all proclaim a message of the future when we proclaim the Gospel

Application Points • Outpouring of the Spirit (14) • But even those who claim to have knowledge of the future, we can only know if it coincides with the Scriptures and if it happens • Just as the prophets of old were judged by whether they were faithful to God and if what they said came true • We can know the difference but we should always be cautious to proclaim anything on behalf of God • Simply put, no prophetic utterance will go against the Scriptures or the Gospel, and any who do should be condemned as a false prophet

Application Points • Outpouring of the Spirit (15) • This is the outpouring of the Holy Spirit • This Spirit guides us, strengthens us, calls us further into Christ • This Spirit loves us, cherishes us, and in whom we walk • This Companion, this Helper, who is with us always • We are blessed, for we know that the prophet Joel spoke true, and know further that we have received the Spirit of God • We can rest assured salvation has come • The greatest evidence is the Spirit who testifies to the truth of the Gospel

  36. Application Points • Outpouring of the Spirit (16) • As you live, and as you move, remember the Spirit of God who is with you • You are never alone, He is with each of us • The Spirit of God who leads us in truth, we can know the Spirit is with us • Praise God for He has poured out His Spirit upon us! • “In him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, 14 who is the guarantee of our inheritance until we acquire possession of it, to the praise of his glory.” (Ephesians 1:13-14, ESV)

  37. Application Points • The Gospel • Origins • Where we come from • Fall • What happened with the world • Redemption • God brings salvation and fixes the world • Future • Where it all leads…to either judgment or glorification
