  1. “The Open Window” A really good prank gone horribly wrong?

  2. Saki • This is the gentleman who wrote the story you’re about to read. • Prediction (Remember what that means?) • Take a moment to predict what the author looks like, and who he might be, based on his name.

  3. Surprised? • I thought you would be. • This is Hector Hugh Monroe or Saki. He was born on December 18, 1870 in British occupied Burma.

  4. Map Connections About Burma • It used to be a part of India • It was under British rule from 1824-1948 3. In 1989 Burma became Myanmar

  5. A Short History of Saki • At the age two, Hector’s pregnant mother was charged by a cow. The shock of it caused her to die. • Hector and his siblings were then sent to England to live with his strict, puritanical grandmother. • After his education, Hector intended to be an Inspector like his father in Burma; however he contracted malaria. He travelled back home to England.

  6. Continued • Though he was 43 (overage for the draft) Hector chose to join the fight in WWI • In 1916, though he was too sick to fight, Hector fought in the Battle of Ancre (France) • He was killed by a German sniper • Many sources say his final words were, “Put that bloody cigarette out!”

  7. The Open Window • The pen name “Saki” is rumored to be from a favorite poem of Monroe’s. However, others believe it was taken from the name of a South American monkey. • “Saki” was known for stories of the macabre. • Macrebre (pronounced ma-cob): involving death or violence in a way that is strange, frightening, or unpleasant • Like O. Henry, Monroe was best known for his short stories.

  8. Before You Read • Tone: the attitude an author adopts toward his subject and his readers. • Irony: Yep. It’s in here too. Try to determine which kind is used in our story. • Names: • Mrs. SAPleton • Mr. NUTtle • Vera : taken from the latin “veritas” meaning: truth
