Global Initiatives • Campus center which supports and encourages the Miami commitment to dynamic and comprehensive internationalization resulting in a diverse and global learning environment for our students • Administrative unit which houses international and continuing education offices • FSB International Programs office helps to support this mission within the Farmer School of Business, and works closely with GI

  4. Context • Approx. 48% of Miami students study abroad or away • Goal of 60% participation rate • Global Initiatives • Your students’ contexts?

  5. What is Study Abroad? • An academic, credit-bearing international experience • Vary in length, credit hours, benefits • Types of programs: • MUDEC • Faculty-led • Exchange, co-sponsored, and approved

MU Dolibois European Center • Miami’s campus in Differdange, Luxembourg • 80% European-based faculty; 20% Ohio-based faculty • Miami credit; course list available • Semester, summer, and year-long options • All federal and Miami financial aid applies • Students largely use to fulfill Miami plan credits

Faculty-Led Programs • International and domestic • Miami faculty; Miami credit • Offerings can vary year to year, but generally stay consistent • Primarily summer winter programs running 2-8 weeks • All federal and Miami financial aid applies • Use depends on workshop – some are major specific, and some are used to fulfill Global Miami Plan requirements

  8. Third Party and Direct Enrollments • Exchange: students pay Miami tuition and fees and exchange places with students at partner schools. All federal and most Miami aid applies. • Co-sponsored: students directly enroll via a host provider, paying host program rates. All federal and Miami aid applies. • Approved: students directly enroll via a host provider, paying host program rates. Federal aid applies; Miami aid does not. • Students travel as individuals rather than in a MU group • Transfer credits; major courses or electives • Greater variety in courses and locations

Study Abroad and the Global Miami Plan • Global Perspectives (6 to 9 hours) • Study Abroad (any 6 hours fulfills requirement), or • G-Courses (9 hours), or • G-Clusters (9 hours) • Developing ‘well-rounded’ students • Discipline exploration; cross-cultural perspectives to major coursework • Building a Global University • Shared Futures

  13. Getting to 60% • Increasing our online resources to facilitate student and adviser access • Emphasis on follow through with students who express interest • Diversifying programming to fit student needs

Where You Come In • Encourage students to study abroad; send them our way or let us know when they express interest – we will follow up • Encourage early planning – we can generally make it work for each student, but more planning and academic flexibility make it easier • Identify best times / courses to study abroad • Transfer credit approval forms • Help us identify student needs that aren’t being met • Ask us questions
