CS in Chile • Developing country, 17M inhabitants • Several key areas require CS/IT support • Atacama Large Millimeter Array • Mining, Seismology • Chile needs CS professionals • However, our universities keep reporting drops in admission rates for women in engineering • Only 10% of CS mayors are female

  3. Challenges • Culturally accepted sexism • Financial issues • Lack of gender-specific funding opportunities • Complex geography • Long and narrow country • Small communities • Lack of critical mass

  4. Strategies • Try to achieve critical mass quickly • Find collaborators at different institutions • Have a fund-raising strategy • Foster diversity • Industry vs. academia, moms vs. non-moms • Plan for sustained growth • Avoid heroic efforts
