  1. From Chaos to Christmas Experiencing the Birth of Christ Biblically #1 – The Preparation Matthew 3:1-10

  2. “Christmasitis” • Do you have more than five giant inflatable lawn decorations? • Did you buy any of this year’s Christmas presents at the after Christmas sales last year? • Do you leave your Christmas lights up all year and try to pass them off as lights to celebrate other holidays? • Have you ever bought an artificial tree because real ones don’t last for three months? • Do you rent or own a shed or storage unit because you have more decorations than your house can hold?

  3. 1 In those days John the Baptist came, preaching in the Wilderness of Judea 2 and saying, “Repent, because the kingdom of heaven has come near!” 3 For he is the one spoken of through the prophet Isaiah, who said: A voice of one crying out in the wilderness: Prepare the way for the Lord; make His paths straight! 4 John himself had a camel-hair garment with a leather belt around his waist, and his food was locusts and wild honey. 5 Then ⌊people from⌋ Jerusalem, all Judea, and all the vicinity of the Jordan were flocking to him, Matthew 3:1-5

  4. 6 and they were baptized by him in the Jordan River as they confessed their sins. 7 When he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to the place of his baptism, he said to them, “Brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath? 8 Therefore produce fruit consistent with repentance. 9 And don’t presume to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father.’ For I tell you that God is able to raise up children for Abraham from these stones! Matthew 3:6-9

  5. 10 Even now the ax is ready to strike the root of the trees! Therefore, every tree that doesn’t produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire. Matthew 3:10

  6. Word #1 – Repent • Repentance begins with confession • Repentance is the taking confession to the next level. • Confession is agreeing with God concerning your sin; repentance is turning away from your sin and to God.

  7. Word #2 – Prepare • Prepare in Hebrew refers to a clearing out. • Isaiah 26:7 • Preparation means we must make sure we are ready to receive Him.

  8. Word #3 – Produce • “Therefore produce fruit consistent with repentance.” • Religion does not equate to salvation. • Salvation is not about what we can do, but what we allow Jesus to do in us.
