How often do you realize !!! you forgot something? Does it seem like you’re always cleaning up, or thinking you should? Are you embarrassed when people drop in? Do you have time and space for the truly important things in your life?

  18. Yes, disorganization is stressful! Life is hard enough. Organization makes it easier.

  19. Why haven’t I gotten organized yet? Perhaps you’re trying to do it your parents’ or grandparents’ way.

  20. Why haven’t I gotten organized yet? Perhaps you’re trying to do it your parents’ or grandparents’ way. Maybe you’re making it more complicated than it needs to be.

  21. Why haven’t I gotten organized yet? Perhaps you’re trying to do it your parents’ or grandparents’ way. Maybe you’re making it more complicated than it needs to be. Perhaps you’re intimidated because you’ve tried and failed before.

  22. Why haven’t I gotten organized yet? Perhaps you’re trying to do it your parents’ or grandparents’ way. Maybe you’re making it more complicated than it needs to be. Perhaps you’re intimidated because you’ve tried and failed before. Maybe it wasn’t that important to you until now.

  23. Why haven’t I gotten organized yet? • Here are some common beliefs: • I don’t have time to get organized! • I have no idea where to start. • I need special tools for this and I don’t have them. • It’s going to be no fun and I can’t tolerate that. • I can’t stay focused long enough to do this. • It’s too overwhelming—my emotions get the best of me when I try to tackle this project. • Yes, these beliefs can be changed!

  24. Why haven’t I gotten organized yet? • Here are some common mistakes: • Not looking at the big picture • Not recognizing the domino effect • Buying too many or inadequate containers • Making your systems fit the tools • Not prioritizing and planning your projects • Underestimating how much time you’ll need • Yes, these mistakes can be corrected!

  25. Yes, organization can be simple! A few new systems and habits will give you less stress, more money, and more time for what matters.

  26. OK, I’m Ready—Tell Me How! Change your beliefs Change your habits Add new systems

  27. 1. Change Your Beliefs “I don’t have time to get organized!” If this is true, you’re making it too complicated. Start small. Still too much? Go smaller! Five minutes every day Do you have time to be disorganized?

  28. 1. Change Your Beliefs “My mother never had trouble with this, so neither should I.” Our Daily Mail = Mom’s Monthly Mail = Grandma’s Yearly Mail!

  29. 1. Change Your Beliefs “I don’t know where to start.” Anywhere is fine! Options include: What’s bothering you most A project that’s holding up other projects Something time-sensitive Something that will save or earn you money A project that will create a dramatic change quickly Before you dive in, prioritize

  30. 1. Change Your Beliefs “I need special tools or supplies.” Not like TV Can be done with affordable containers or ones you already have Get ideas from books, magazines, and websites Exception: chronic disorganization

  31. 1. Change Your Beliefs “It’s too boring/I can’t stay focused.” Make it fun with music, a friend, and your favorite beverage Play “Beat the Clock” Promise yourself a reward If you really can’t focus (e.g. AD/HD), get someone to be your “anchor”

  32. 1. Change Your Beliefs “It’s too emotional and overwhelming.” Aim for “organized enough” Be realistic about how long it will take Guilt is not a helpful motivator Let a professional help you: Professional organizer Chronic disorganization coach Counselor or therapist

  33. Are you beginning to believe you can do this? If you don’t believe, you won’t receive. Have faith and get started.

  34. 2. Change Your Habits Prioritize everything. First, organize your thoughts List projects in priority order Look at contingencies, a.k.a. the domino effect Not just belongings: time commitments too Schedule it like an appointment

  35. 2. Change Your Habits Purchase with a plan. Plan and measure before you buy containers Function first: Pretty is nice, but will it work? Save time and money every time you shop: Make a list and stick to it

  36. 2. Change Your Habits Keep your eye on the big picture. When you’re stuck in details, take a break and look at your list of priorities Refocus on the forest when you’re too close to the trees If the big picture gives you vertigo, stay low. Focus on one small area Use visual aids (hula hoop, paper towel roll)

  37. 2. Change Your Habits … but not too drastically! Build on what works Change one habit or system at a time Give it time to sink in—for yourself and your family If it still doesn’t work or stops working, change again

  38. 2. Change Your Habits Plan to maintain. Once you “get organized,” you won’t “stay organized” unless you can “live organized” No system will work if you don’t use it Everything needs maintenance Do “constant organizing”* *Judith Kolberg and Kathleen Nadeau in ADD-Friendly Ways to Organize Your Life

  39. Ready to change those habits? That’ll go great with some new systems.

  40. 3. Add New Systems A plan for situational disorganization. It’s what happens when “life happens” Sometimes you’ll fall behind Don’t panic! You can recover Use your priorities list to find your way back

  41. 3. Add New Systems A bill-payment center. Step one: A fail-safe system for the daily mail. RRRIP: Refuse (the verb AND the noun) Refer Recycle Identify Put Away

  42. 3. Add New Systems A bill-payment center. Step two: A central location for bills and supplies

  43. 3. Add New Systems A family binder. Centrally located—the kitchen is popular Use sheet protector pockets What to put in it? School calendars Sports schedules Flyers and tickets for upcoming events Key contact information Permission slips Party invitations and driving directions Mail-order confirmation printouts Pizza coupons! 

  44. 3. Add New Systems A family file box or cabinet. Not just for offices any more Get as much file space as you need Use categories, but not too many Don’t go overboard with color-coding Purge/archive annually What to put in it? Paid bills Receipts Instruction manuals and warranties Insurance policies Tax documents Copy of everything in your wallet

  45. 3. Add New Systems A family file box or cabinet. If you don’t do this, what will happen? …

  46. 3. Add New Systems When we say “Use vertical space,” this is not what we mean. But speaking of that …

  47. 3. Add New Systems Take a new perspective on space. Create homes Go up Use containers Balance safety, convenience, and aesthetics

  48. Want a head start? Need a hand? A professional organizer can get you up and running.

  49.
