Autumn Leaves

This project-based learning experience allows students to explore the beauty and utility of autumn leaves by engaging with the natural environment and conducting online research. Students will embark on a nature walk to collect materials for crafting a turkey centerpiece for Thanksgiving, learning about various seeds, pods, and leaves along the way. Project Based Learning allows the stusents to learn through interacting with a real environment as well as virtually researching parts of their project over the internet. • Project Based Learning allows the students to follow a set of guided questions which may take them down paths that were not thought of in the beginning of the project

  3. Activities • Not all learning has to happen inside the classroom. • There will be a nature walk to gather materials to create a turkey for your Thanksgiving centerpiece. • The students can research the types of seeds, seedpods, cones, stems and leaves that they gather. • They can make an annotated booklet with samples of the leaves that they bring back.

  4. Bonus Advantages • They will learn how nice it is to walk around the neighborhood on a pleasant autumn day as well as learning the scientific names of the leaves that they will put in their leaf books. • They will get good exercise on the hike.

  5. The Economy • In these uncertain economic times, perhaps it is not a good time to spend big money on an extravagant centerpiece for your Thanksgiving table. • A handcrafted turkey made out of Pine cones and beautiful autumn leaves may be just tne money saver that you are looking for.
