Cromwell Con’t • He became Lord Protector of England after Parliament offered him the title of King of England and he refused. • People did not like his strict rule!! • He banned drinking, dancing, and gambling because he was a strict Puritan.
1649- Cromwell savagely crushed an Irish rebellion. • 3,000 Royalists were butchered after they had surrendered! • England then became a military dictatorship under Cromwell. • The Scots invited Charles II to become their King and Cromwell declared war and won forcing Charles II to flee back to Europe.
Cromwell CANCELED Christmas! • If the military smelled your goose cooking on Christmas they would steal it!
1656 a bright comet flying through the sky was seen as a bad omen! • 1657: The plague returns to England, killing one sixth of London. • Cromwell dies in 1658 and his son Richard is a total failure as ruler.
King James I First Stuart Monarch
Thought of himself as an Absolute Monarch. • He did not like the idea of Parliament having much power. “ The State of the Monarchy…is the supremest thing upon earth: for Kings are not only God’s lieutenants upon earth, and sit upon throne, but even by God himself are called Gods.”
He also DID NOT LIKE SMOKING! He wrote an essay called: "A Counterblast to Tobacco“ in which he said, “ Smoking, a custom loathsome to the eye, hateful to the nose, harmful to the brain, dangerous to the lungs, and in the black, stinking fume thereof, nearest resembling the horrible Stygian smoke of the pit that is bottomless."
James hated the Puritans. • Was James VI of Scotland but when he became King of England his name changed to James I. • Commissioned the King James version of the bible. • He added thees and thous to make it sound older than it really was.
