Sentence #1 • Topic sentence • Introduction about the beach • Examples: • No place is as _______ as the beach. • I always enjoy_______ at the beach. • Make sure you indent!
Brainstorm! • Fold paper #2 vertically into three columns. • Label each column: Adjectives, Nouns, Verbs. • Create a list of words about waves for each column. • Examples: • Adjectives—blue, icy, salty • Nouns—piers, rocks, foam • Verbs—crash, curl, roar
Sentence #2 • Return to paper #1 and write a sentence about waves. • Begin this sentence with a participle or gerund (a verb + ing word) and include adjectives. • Example: • Crashing, the icy waves roared onto the sand and tickled my feet. • Make sure your sentence does not contain BE verbs!
AVOID “BE” VERBS Try not to use the forms of be unless absolutely necessary: am, is, are, was, were, be, being, been • Crashing, the icy waves roared onto the sand and tickled my feet. • Crashing, the icy waves were roaring onto the sand and tickling my feet.

Write a sentence about the children at the beach. • Begin this sentence with a prepositional phrase. • Examples: • Along the warm, sandy shore, sunburned children happily built sandcastles. • Near the foamy, white waters… • Make sure this sentence does not contain BE verbs!
Brainstorm! • Return to paper #2 and create three columns of words about lifeguards at the beach! (School appropriate, of course) • Examples: • What do they look like, smell like, etc. (Adjectives) • What do they have with them? (Nouns) • What are they doing? (Verbs)
Sentence #4 • Return to paper #1 and write a sentence about lifeguards. • Begin this sentence with two adjectives joined by a conjunction. • Examples: • Strong and brave, the watchful lifeguards rescued a struggling swimmer. • Tired yet watchful, the bronzed lifeguard scanned the beach for signs of trouble. • Make sure this sentence does not contain BE verbs!
Sentence #5 • Closing/clincher sentence • Wrap it up! On paper #1, write a closing sentence that includes the future or a summary. • Examples: • I hope I can visit Miami Beach again next summer! • Perhaps on my next birthday, I can go to the beach again.
