  1. This slide show describes two initiatives, one underway and one starting later this yea, that we think will be a small but important step towards providing an education fit for purpose in the 21st century

Preparing our students for uncertainty … We want our students to be authors of their own life stories and not subjects of it.   And if they are going to be authors and not subjects then we can be fairly certain they will need to be more knowledgeable than any previous generation and to be better learners Children are now living a different childhood to the one we lived

A key question for me is: how do we embrace autonomy as an engine for creating a better educational system, but with the inevitable failures that will occur, whilst at the same time meeting our responsibility to ensure that the one education our children get is a good one? Can we really say to any child, I’m sorry those we gave autonomy to let you down but this is a necessary cost of developing a better education system

  4. The 20 percent time is a well-known part of our philosophy here, enabling engineers to spend one day a week working on projects that aren't necessarily in our job descriptions. You can use the time to develop something new, or if you see something that's broken, you can use the time to fix it. And this is how I recently worked up a new feature for Google Reader. One Friday evening in Manchester in 2004, they were doing one of their regular Friday night experiments – a time where they would try out often bizarre and zany techniques – by stripping tiny molecules of carbon from graphite. A team of materials scientists and physicists from Manchester recently reported that graphene has the potential to replace carbon fibres in high performance materials that are used to build aircraft.

  8. Is the BLP model of the learning process one we can work with? If we engineer our curriculum to develop the learning capacities that comprise the model will we build better learners?
