Enhancing Public Safety: Addressing Pipeline Strikes in Coastal and Marine Areas (1987-2007)

From 1987 to 2007, pipeline strikes in coastal and marine areas resulted in 25 fatalities, 17 injuries, and approximately 100,000 barrels of oil spills, causing over $100 million in property damage. To improve public safety and environmental protection, CAMO emphasizes education, stakeholder awareness, and the cost-effectiveness of prevention over incident response. Key initiatives include outreach to mariners, the workboat industry, and law enforcement. Effective measures must be taken to bridge gaps and enhance existing laws regarding submerged facilities and third-party damage reduction.
