  1. Narrative Elements of a Story Why are they important?

  2. There are 4 main narrative elements of a story… • Characters: Who are the main people in the story? • Setting: When/where does the story take place? (Time, location, descriptive surroundings) • Plot: What is the main problem in the story? What events lead up to the problem and solution? • Solution: How is the problem solved?

  3. Let’s review some stories we’re all familiar with and find their narrative elements… • A Bad Case of Stripes • Who was the main character? • Camilla Cream was who the book was all about. • Where is the setting? • The story takes place in school and at her house.

  4. How about the plot and solution? • What is the plot? (Main problem/events) • The problem was that Camilla felt different than her peers, and didn’t want to get made fun of for liking lima beans. Camilla developed a bad case of stripes and felt even more different than she would have eating lima beans. • What is the solution to this problem? • Camilla is given a lima bean from a wise woman. She becomes herself again and realizes that it’s okay to like different things.

  5. How about the book we read together, Thunder Cake, By Patricia Polacco • Who were the main characters? • The grandma and the young girl (the author) • What is the setting? (Time, location) • It took place in the summer on a farm in Michigan

  6. How about the plot and solution? • What was the plot? • The young girl was afraid of thunder and often hid under the bed during a storm. The grandmother and granddaughter took several trips around the farm and woods to gather ingredients to make a Thunder Cake. • What is the solution? • After making the Thunder Cake, the young girl never feared thunder again.

  7. Let’s review… • The 4 main narrative story elements are: • Characters • Setting • Plot • Solution • Let’s see if you can complete one more activity before working on this independently…
