  1. College Readiness Program at Hennepin Technical College Mark J. Felsheim, Ph. D. Vice President of Student Affairs Lisa Roney College Readiness Director Hennepin Technical College

  2. The College Readiness Advocates were hired to help to create a college-going culture among under represented students in four high schools.

  3. Activities: • Individual sessions with juniors and seniors regarding post secondary plans. • Campus tours to Hennepin Technical College • College Preview Nights: Bus transportation provided for students in our partner schools.

  4. Activities, Con. • 75 students from Robbinsdale Cooper and South High’s All Nations Program participated in hands on activities during Architectural Design and Construction Day at HTC. • Facilitated the Accuplacer test for students planning to attend a MnSCU school. • Provided the A+dvancer tutorial program to enhance improvement on the Accuplacertest.

WhatWorked During our Experience: • Conducting individual sessions with seniors on career choices, college exploration, scholarships and financial aid. • Assisting with college applications, FAFSA, and information on application fee waivers. • Utilizing the A+dvancer program, an online tutorial, to improve scores on the Accuplacer Test and assist with passing the MCA grad test in reading.

What Worked During our Experience: • Being present at the schools at least two days a week helps to establish a relationship between the students, staff and advocates . • Holding a financial aid help session during parent teacher conferences to assist families who do not have computers. • Administering career inventory assessments by HTC for high school students who were unsure of a career . • Visiting HTC’s campus for Career Day and College Preview Night.

Factors that Determine the Success of the College Readiness Program in our Partner Schools: • The needs of the partner schools and their willingness to provide the College Readiness Advocates with access to students, school data, and student information. • The ability of the College Readiness Advocates to build relationships with students. • Eliminating barriers that may hamper the student from applying and being accepted to college.

Eliminating barriers that may hamper the student from applying and being accepted to college. • The College Readiness Advocates administering the Accuplacer test at the partner schools. • Supplying students with the A+dvancer program to assist in getting Accuplacer scores up to college level. Students entering at college level tend to have a higher retention rate.

  10. Factors that Determine the Success of the College Readiness Program in our Partner Schools, con, • Supplying students with information on their programs of interest. This may include giving the students the MNSCU Go Places booklet to compare tuition costs. • Supplying students with the scholarship information to elevate the increasing cost of higher education.

  11. Conclusion Success Depends upon: • Building a sense of trust with school districts. • Building connections with the administration and teachers. • Working closely with the counselors. • Connecting with students and parents.

Accuplacer math results after using the A+dvancer Program 88 students had Pre & Post scores – • 72 of 88 ( 81.8% ) had an increase in their post Accuplacer math scores. • 43 of 88 students (48.8%) had an increase of at least 10 points. • 26 of 88 (30%) had an increase of 20 or more points on the post Accuplacer math test.

Accuplacer Reading results after using the A+dvancer Program • 19 students had Pre and Post Accuplacer scores. • 11 students from this group passed the MCA Grad Reading test. • 7 of 19 students ( 36.8%) increased their score on the post Accuplacer • The highest increase was + 27 points on the post- Accuplacer- Reading portion.
