Things to Know… • Oral tradition is the sharing of stories by word of mouth. • Stories of oral tradition were created thousands of years ago. • New details were added and changed as the stories were passed down. • Details of the story reflected storyteller’s cultural perspective, or view of the world. • Themes of folk literature are presented in the form of a moral, a lesson about life that is stated directlyusually at the end of the work

  3. Forms of Folk Literature • Myths • Legends • Tall Tales • Folk Tales • Fables • Epics

  4. Myths • Tales that relate the actions of gods. Goddesses, and the heroes who interact with them

  5. Legends • Traditional stories based on real-life events. • Are told and retold, leading to changing details • Characters become larger than life

  6. Tall Tales • Focuses on a central hero who performs impossible feats.

  7. Folk Tales • May deal with real people or magical characters • Reflect values and beliefs of culture in which they were created.

  8. Characteristics of Folk Literature

  9. Heroes and Heroines • Larger-than-life figures who overcome obstacles or participate in exciting adventures

  10. Quest A journey filled with adventure that the hero or heroine goes on to achieve an important goal. Often featured in myths, legends, epics

  11. Trickster • A clever character who can fool others but often gets into trouble. • Often featured in folk tales, fables

  12. Personification • A type of figurative language in which nonhuman subjects are given human qualities • Featured in myths, fables • EX: The fluffy blanket hugged me as I drifted off to sleep.

  13. Hyperbole • A type of figurative language in which something is exaggerated • Featured in tall tales, myths, epics • EX: The lumberjack had the strength of 10,000 men.

  14. Dialect • Language spoken by people in a particular region or group • Featured in tall tales, folk tales

  15. Examining structure & theme • Repetition- repetition of events, dialogue, descriptions, and patterns • This adds rhythm to text • Help build suspense and emphasize main idea • Pattern- repeated element • Once upon a time • Happily ever after

  16. Examining structure & theme • Archetypes-used to communicate themes such as power of love or importance of bravery • Plot • Characters • ideas • Flat characters- have one main trait: kindness, cruelty, wisdom, foolishness • Help express important themes
