Myths • Tales that relate the actions of gods. Goddesses, and the heroes who interact with them
Legends • Traditional stories based on real-life events. • Are told and retold, leading to changing details • Characters become larger than life
Tall Tales • Focuses on a central hero who performs impossible feats.
Folk Tales • May deal with real people or magical characters • Reflect values and beliefs of culture in which they were created.
Heroes and Heroines • Larger-than-life figures who overcome obstacles or participate in exciting adventures
Quest A journey filled with adventure that the hero or heroine goes on to achieve an important goal. Often featured in myths, legends, epics
Trickster • A clever character who can fool others but often gets into trouble. • Often featured in folk tales, fables
Personification • A type of figurative language in which nonhuman subjects are given human qualities • Featured in myths, fables • EX: The fluffy blanket hugged me as I drifted off to sleep.
Hyperbole • A type of figurative language in which something is exaggerated • Featured in tall tales, myths, epics • EX: The lumberjack had the strength of 10,000 men.
Dialect • Language spoken by people in a particular region or group • Featured in tall tales, folk tales
