  1. Causes of the American Revolution

  2. 1763 • French and Indian War ends with the Peace of Paris • The Proclamation of 1763 bans all westward migration in the colonies • Chief Pontiac leads an Indian rebellion in the Ohio Valley

  3. 1764 • Sugar Act • Lowered the tax rate on molasses (trying to stop smuggling if the tax is lower) • Taxed goods that had not been taxed before (silk, wine, coffee, pimento, indigo, sugar) • Created a new court mainly for cases on smuggling • “No taxation without representation” • Currency Act • Banned paper use in the colonies to help slow inflation.

  4. 1765 • Stamp Act • Britain needed to raise money because of the debt from the French and Indian War. • Taxed paper goods such as newspapers, pamphlets, posters, wills, mortgages, deeds, licenses, diplomas, and playing card • Quartering Act • Must provide British soldiers accommodations such as food, housing, and anything they could need • Stamp Act Congress • Representatives from 9 colonies met • Drafted the Declaration of Rights and Grievances • Declared only the colonists’ political representatives had the right to tax, not Parliament

  5. 1766 • Stamp Act repealed! • Declaratory Act • Parliament had power to make laws for the colonies

  6. 1767 • Townshend Acts • Revenue Act • Taxed glass, lead, paper, paint, and tea • If you didn’t pay the taxes, then you went to a court system with no jury • Writs of Assistance • General search warrants that allowed officers to enter any location during the day to look for evidence of smuggling • Letters from a Farmer in Pennsylvania – John Dickinson • Argued that only elected assemblies had the right to tax • Argued to resist the Townshend Acts

  7. 1768 • Samuel Adams composes the Massachusetts “circular letter” • This criticized Townshend Acts • British troops are sent to Boston!

  8. 1770 • Boston Massacre • British soldiers killed 5 colonists • The first man killed was Crispus Attucks, a mulatto man. (What does mulatto mean?) • The Townshend Acts are repealed except the tax on tea! • What might this lead to?
