  2. Learning Intention • I will collect ideas to discuss in my next folio piece on underage drinking. Task: Describe what underage drinking means to you and what you think about it.

  3. Why are we writing another essay? • Why are we writing an informative essay on underage drinking?

  4. The facts • 10% of 12-15 yr-old drinkers say they buy their own alcohol.[1]63% of 16-17 yr-olds have bought their own booze in pubs, nightclubs and bars. • 54% of 11-12 year olds said they drank at home or at someone else's home. 33% of 15 yr-olds drank alcohol in a pub or bar and 26% of 14-yr-olds said they drank at parties with friends. • A majority of head teachers surveyed in 2004 by the BBC Six-o'clock news believed that alcohol was a bigger problem than drug abuse in their schools. • The legal drinking age in Britain is 18. In the USA it is 21 and in some European countries, e.g. Germany and Italy, it is 16.

  8. Learning Intention • I will research underage drinking in order to prepare for my essay. Task: Describe your relationship with alcohol. Describe all the ways in which you come into contact with alcohol (parties, adverts, shops etc). How does this make you feel? Are you ever tempted? Why?

How do you know about these? • Would you say that alcohol advertisements are aimed at young people? In what way? • What do these adverts make you think about alcohol? Is this good or bad and why? • Do you think companies should be allowed to advertise alcohol? Why?

  12. Task • Look through the books on underage drinking. • Search the books for interesting facts, statistics and information about the topic. • Write the information into your jotter so you can use it in your essay.

Remember to: • Describe examples and include facts you have learned about. • Write formally and clearly. • Organise your ideas and don’t go off on tangents. • Spell and punctuate accurately. • Make your essay interesting and detailed.
