  3. RAISE YOUR HAND IF YOU'RE 21

  4. In the US the drinking age is 21 • It is illegal for anyone under the age of 21 to purchase alcohol. • Underage drinking increases the likelihood of chronic alcohol problems.

  5. Risks Continued • Some mental changes of underage drinking include having memory lapses and poor concentration. • Studies have shown that alcohol use by youth and young adults increases the risk of both fatal and nonfatal injuries. ?

  6. Brain Development - Inner part of your brain that controls emotion matures in early adolescence • Frontal Cortex = Decision Making, Behavior Control, & Self- Regulation matures more slowly - Frontal Cortex = Decision Making, Behavior Control, & Self- Regulation matures more slowly

  7. Reasons not to drink • Alcohol use contributes to: • Youth suicides • Homicide • Fatal injuries • These are the second leading cause of death among teenagers. • As many as two-thirds of all sexual assaults and date rapes of teens

  8. Need More? OK! • Unintended pregnancy • Chronic diseases • Unintentional injuries • Continued stress • Weight gain or loss • Violence • Poor school performance • Failure to fulfill major responsibilities at work, school, and home

  9. The Bottom Line • Not only is there a drinking age of 21 for health reasons, but there also is a HUGE responsibility that accompanies choosing to drink.

  10. Oh yeah, and it's illegal.

  11. Serving alcohol to minors can result in a lawsuit • Private individuals can be sued if they provide alcohol to anyone under 21 and subsequently, the minor then injures others

  12. False Identification Use a fake I.D.....Lose your license. -It is illegal for anyone under 21 to possess alcohol with the intent to consume it. -It’s also against the law for anyone under 21 to use fake identification to purchase alcohol. Tampering with a New York State (or any state) driver’s license can result in the loss of that license for 90 days.

  13. Underage Drinking and Driving It has been illegal since 1985 to drink alcohol if you’re under 21 The Zero Tolerance Law (1996) : if you’re under 21, and found to have been driving with a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of .02% — one drink — or higher, you’ll lose your license for at least six months. -You will also have to pay a $125 fine and an additional $100 to get your license back.

  14. If it happens again, your license will be revoked for one year or until you turn 21, whichever is later. -You will also be fined and pay additional fees to get your license back. If you have a BAC of .07% or more, even tougher DWI/DWAI penalties will be imposed, including possible jail terms.

  15. Exit Ticket • Question: What happens if you are caught drinking and driving twice under the age of 21? • Journal:Do you think legal consequences surrounding underage drinking are too loose? too strict? why?
