  3. manual • Bette Nesmith was a secretary from Texas that had always gotten by just fine with her manual typewriter. It had no power and had to be pushed from side to side by hand. • Manipulated or done by hand

  4. smudge • New carbon based ink caused the letters to appear clearer but the ink would smudge much easier causing papers to sometimes look messy. • To smear or streak as in make a blurry mark

  5. constantly • Bette Nesmith was a poor typist so she was constantly trying to improve her skills in order to keep her job. • Continuously taking place

  6. frazzled • The newer versions of typewriters weren’t familiar to Nesmith so she was often frazzled on how to work them. • Confused, baffled, or perplexed
