  1. Periodic Table Groups Ch.19, Sec.1

  2. Groups • 3 main groups: • Metals • Nonmetals • Metalloids (Semi-Conductors)

  3. Metals • Middle and left of table • Conductors • Shiny solids • Malleable (bendable)

  4. Special Metal Groups • Alkali Metals • Alkaline Earth Metals • Transition Metals • Lanthanides • Actinides

  5. Alkali Metals • Group (column) 1 • Very reactive • 1 valence e- • +1 cation • In nature as compounds • Ex: NaCl (salt)

  6. Alkaline Earth Metals • Group 2 • 2 valence e- • +2 cations • Useful to humans

  7. Transition Metals • Groups 3-12 • Not as reactive • Cations • Useful metals

  8. Lanthanides • Part of transition metals • Period 6 - below rest of table

  9. Actinides • Part of transition metals • Period 7 - below rest of table

  10. Nonmetals • Right side of table except for Hydrogen • Solid, liquid, or gas • Dull, brittle, and nonconductors

  11. Special Nonmetal Groups • Halogens • Noble Gases

  12. Halogens • Group 17 • Very reactive • 7 valence e- • -1 anions • Most compounds

  13. Noble Gases • Group 18 • Full outer shells • Unreactive

  14. Metalloids / Semiconductors • On “zig-zag” • Nonmetals that can conduct • Ex: silicon - used in computers
