  11. Reading A Task 1 Task 2

  12. Reading A Task 1 Listen to the passage and fill in the missing information. Anti-lock Brake Systems (ABS) The antilock brake system (ABS) helps prevent a vehicle’s wheels from __________ during “panic” braking, which allows the driver to maintain greater steering control as the vehicle is quickly slowed—a key factor in __________ a collision. However, ABS does not __________ you will avoid a crash. In fact, you still may lose control when driving at excessive speed or during __________ steering maneuvers. All passenger cars __________ with ABS have four-wheel ABS. SUVs, trucks, and vans equipped with ABS may have either four-wheel or two-wheel ABS. Four-wheel ABS monitors and controls all the wheels of the vehicle, whereas two-wheel ABS only ___________________ the rear wheels. In vehicles with two-wheel ABS, the front wheels can still lock during hard or __________ braking and this lockup can result in the loss of steering control. locking avoiding guarantee extreme equipped monitors and controls panic 12

  13. Reading A available • Some four-wheel ABS systems include Brake Assist, which is only __________ with ABS systems. During __________ braking, this feature provides more brake power to help the driver achieve full brake-pedal force. Under certain conditions, Brake Assist can __________ reduce overall stopping distance by activating the braking system more quickly. emergency potential

  14. Reading A Task 2: Read the passage and choose the best answer to complete the statements. 1. ABS does not guarantee you will avoid a crash if you __________. A. the vehicle is quickly slowed B. drive at excessive speed C. have gentle steering maneuvers B 2.In vehicles with two-wheel ABS, the lockup of the front wheels can__________. A .monitors and controls the rear wheels B. lead to the loss of steering control. C. maintain greater steering control B

  15. Reading A C 3. During emergency braking, __________ provides more brake power to help the driver achieve full brake-pedal force. A. panic braking B. two-wheel ABS C. Brake Assist A 4. What does the word “rear” mean in the passage? A. back B. middle C.front

  16. Text Task 2 Task 1 Reading B Task 3

  17. Reading B How Emergency Brakes Work Emergency brakes are a secondary braking system installed in motor vehicles. Also known as e-brakes, hand brakes and parking brakes, emergency brakes are not powered by hydraulics and are independent of the service brakes used to slow and stop vehicles. The e-brake is called an emergency brake for a reason -- using it can save your life.

  18. Reading B Chrysler Service Contracts Emergency Brake Parts Motor vehicles use either drum brakes or disc brakes. Drum brakes are common in the rear wheels, while disc brakes are most common on the front wheels (or all four wheels). Electric e-brakes are available on some cars today. Advanced electric brake systems utilize computer-controlled motors to engage the brake caliper.

  19. Reading B Chrysler Service Contracts When to Use the Emergency Brake The most common use of the emergency brake is as a parking brake. Those who drive manual transmission vehicles, or stick shifts, usually engage the emergency brake every time they exit the car. If not engaged, the car might just roll away all on its own. Automatic transmission drivers tend to use the emergency brake far less. The emergency brake can also be used as an aid to manual transmission drivers to prevent rollback when starting on a hill. Pulling the emergency brake while stopped, and then letting it out as you release the clutch can be tricky, so you might want to practice this maneuver before depending on it. Make sure there’s no one behind you if you’ve never done it before.

  20. Reading B Chrysler Service Contracts Dangers of the Emergency Brake Even though the emergency brake cable is housed in a protective sleeve, with infrequent use, the cable can become corroded and rusted. This can result in cable failure just when you need it the most. Normal use keeps the cable in good condition, though you should have the emergency brakes routinely inspected, as they sometimes need to be tightened. If you’re ever in the highly unlikely but extremely serious situation of having your service brakes fail to function, try to stay calm and pull the emergency brake lever up slow and steady, bringing the vehicle to a longer but more controlled stop.

  21. Important Words & Phrases • independent of adj. 独立于(不受...支配的) • Now that you are a college student, you should learn to be • independent of your parents' help. • 既然你已是个大学生了,就应当学着独立,不靠父母的帮助。 • Participation in social groups in the community is independent of religious affiliation. • 社会上的社交团体是不管哪个教派的人都可以参加的。

  22. Important Words & Phrases • utilize v. 利用 • In a magazine you can utilize a picture of your product. • 在杂志里,你可以用你产品的照片。 • It is hoped that in her new job her talents will be better utilized than before. • 希望在新的工作岗位上,她的才干能够得到比以往更好的发挥。

  23. Important Words & Phrases • roll away vt. 滚过去(慢慢移过去) • The coin fell and rolled away. • 硬币掉下滚走了。 • The seagulls fly off, the waves roll away and we depart. • 海鸥飞去,波涛滚滚地流开,我们也分别了。

  24. Important Words & Phrases • have sth. done (让别人)把某事做成 • You'd better have yourtyres checked today, for it looks flat. • 你今天最好把轮胎检查一下,看起来扁扁的。 • I will attend a wedding ceremony this afternoon,so I have to • have my hair dressed. • 今天下午我要去参加一个婚礼,因此我不得不去做头发。
