CIRiS CIRiS Center for Interdisciplinary Research in Space Center for Interdisciplinary Research in Space Control Room “Contributes to the continuous presence of humans in space” “Supporting the International Space Station” Every one that has traveled through barren places has experienced the daily burdened of transporting the food and water needed for future days. The vast distances, in both time and distance, to be traveled when exploring space makes it both economically and practically necessary to develop new concepts to supply the required consumables to the astronauts. Today, life support systems with the necessary regenerative functions holds the best promise to fulfill this ancient dream of a permanent presence of humankind on other planets, and in deep space. Bemannet romfart og samfunnet Et annet viktig satsingsområde ved senteret er å se på hvilke effekter bemannet utforsking av rommet har for samfunnet på jorda. Historien viser at hver gang ny transportteknologi tas i bruk, og nye områder blir tilgjengelige vil dette åvirker vårt bildet av verden og samfunnet vi lever i. CIRiS er i ferd med å bygge opp en forskningsgruppe som skal se nærmere på dette aspektet, i forhold til bemannet utforskning av rommet The ISS is today a beautiful reality, an international accomplishment that Norway, through ESA, is proudly a part of. The ESA Columbus laboratory is a key contribution to an endeavor that has brought humanity to live and work in space uninterruptedly for almost a decade now. CIRiS - Center for Interdisciplinary Research in Space is a department of NTNU Samfunnsforskning AS with the mandate to promote and perform research and development relevant to the Human exploration of space. CIRiS contribute on a daily basis to this endeavor through our support to the utilization and operation of the ISS research facilities and experiments.

Romstasjonen svever som en fugl der kroppen er bo- og forskningsmodulene og vingene er enorme solcellepaneler som skaffer stasjonen strøm.Nærmest i midtmodulene er livbåten som astronautene kan bruke dersom de plutselig må evakuere.
