  1. ENGLISH IIMARCH 5, 2012 1st: Turn in your flashcards on the stool! Warm-up: The Mission Circle ladies discuss the uncivilized, “squalid” lives of the Mrunas. They talk about their sympathy for them, and want to pray for/help them. They also complain of blacks’ depression since the trial. Finally, they act unaffected after hearing of Tom’s death. a. Do you find anything ironic about these religious women? Explain. b. What’s the author’s tone towards these women & how do you know?

  2. REMINDERS • Next due date: Sample Works Cited page will be due on March 9th. • Raise your hand if you have late work from February that you would like to turn in now (or forever hold your peace…) • Homework: • Read to the end of Chapter 26. • Continue to research! Get one more flashcard of research tonight . • Look at your flashcards to see what information you still need– do you need information for your 3rd body paragraph still or perhaps your 2nd body paragraph???

  3. STANDARDS Reading 3.8: Interpret and evaluate the impact of ambiguities [and] ironies in a text

  4. NOTES • Fill in your To Kill a Mockingbird notes with the information on the following slides…

  5. IRONY • While the Mission Circle women present themselves as upright, moral Southern ladies, Lee points out their hypocrisy (pg. 234) • They seem to have sympathy for those whose lives are not up to par with civilized society, yet they have no sympathy (and in fact complain) of those in their own community who struggle with meeting their standards of “civilized” humans.

  6. IRONY • Furthermore, we see the idea of group ethics again– women are supposed to be calm and collected under all circumstances, even if it means ignoring the death of a community member because it would be “unladylike” to show grief. • Considering the group ethics that these ladies abide by, who can they be compared to in the book?

  7. TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD • Let’s continue reading Chapter 25 of To Kill a Mockingbird.

  8. HOMEWORK Read to the end of Chapter 25. Research!
