  3. Academic Article & Pedagogy Holloway, S. (2012). Visual literacies and multiliteracies: an ecology arts-based pedagogical model. Language and Literacy, 14 (3), 150-168. Ecology arts-based pedagogical model: • Digital photography lessons & field trips are used to facilitate curriculum-based lessons in math, science, technology, visual arts, & language arts. Multiliteracies framework: - “invites students to think about how academic content & skills can be used to critically inquire into diverse modes of literacy in real life situations as well as to engage in social justice issues” (p. 152).

  4. Summary of Article(Holloway, S. (2012). Visual literacies and multiliteracies: an ecology arts-based pedagogical model. Language and Literacy, 14 (3), 150-168.) • The article is about a case study in South Western Ontario (2008-2009) which involved 3 schools, 2 teachers, an organic farmer, a professional photographer, a social worker, & ≈100 students from grades 1, 2, 6, 7, & 8. • Holloway (2012) interviewed the adults who observed the children, as they used digital photography “to read the natural world around them” (p.150). • She found 5 common themes: • i) visual literacy & cross-curricular implications, • ii) digital photography to engage writers, • iii) developing a connection to nature, • iv) developing a connection to the larger community, • v) English language learners & visual literacy.

  5. Critique of Article(Holloway, S. (2012). Visual literacies and multiliteracies: an ecology arts-based pedagogical model. Language and Literacy, 14 (3), 150-168.) I agree with the Holloway’s (2012) observation that the students’ photography experience is positive & should be emulated because it was helpful in enhancing their visual literacy, engaging them as writers, & developing in them an appreciation & a connection with nature & their larger communities. I disagree with her observation that the enhancement of visual literacy is a positive observation for English Language Learners (ELLs). • The observers commented that it’s good that the ELLs were able to express themselves better via the pictures rather than in English. • Holloway seemed to have concluded that this is a good way for them to continue to be able to express themselves. - I disagree with this encouragement. - Photography should be used as a fun tool engage & motivate them to want to express themselves in English. - Visual literacy should not be a replacement for English literacy.

Critique • Non-inclusiveness leading to creation of need for more expensive hardware (monopolizing effect on market). • Creators are focused on building and improving the app for new android & iPhone operating systems only. (Instagram. (2014). FAQ. Retrieved from http://instagram.com/about/faq/) • This leads to the exclusion of other operating systems (ex. blackberry & windows phone 7) in dumb phones & cheaper or older smart phones & tablets.

Societal Impact: A world more connected through photos Positive: • No viewing barriers – Pictures are public & anyone can subscribe to follow your photos. • No language barriers - Anyone is able to see & interpret a picture even though we don’t speak the same language. Negative: 1. Lack of privacy – Pictures are public! (The site claims that there is an option to make your account private & only people who you allow to do so will be able to view your photos. However, I cannot find it.) 2. Lack of context – May lead to intended or unintended misinterpretations! (Ex. recent photo of lone 4 year boy crossing a dessert to flee Syrian war was touted for many days by major news outlets, like the BBC, CBC, CNN & others, as being alone but his family was actually only a few meters away.) Use digital photography as a fun tool to: • help students to find meaning in imagery • compliment their written stories • help them tell their stories • Help them “observe, document, & express their views” (Holloway, 2012, p. 157) about their narratives in the natural world as well as their immediate community
