  4. Smart Grid - Status • Consists of 11 Total Projects • Three Completely Finished • Telecom Upgrade • Scheduling Member Hardware and Software Upgrade • Fire Suppression Upgrade • Four Substantially Completed • EMS Alarm Enhancements • Centralized Database Editing • CIP Tools & Data Historian

  5. Smart Grid Status (cont.) • Four to be completed in 2012 • Improved Real-Time Production Costs • Energy Control System Upgrade • Outage Management Tool • Transmission System Model • DOE Grant pays for roughly half of project costs

  6. Telecom Initiative – GTC/GSOC • GSOC responsible for Network monitoring, configuration and troubleshooting of backbone and circuit devices • Pilot Project underway now • Project to be complete by Fall 2014

Information Delivery – Improvements for 2012 • GSOC Data Portal • New Feature: ability to “push” reports • Member Portal – single log-in • Using SharePoint as the platform • Will incorporate Member-Net, Data Portal, Tiger, and GEMC associations • First deployment to GEMC Technology Association is complete • Member IDs are being distributed

Other Projects • ECOT – EMC Customer Outage Tracking Initiative • Automation of EMC reporting • GEMC information flow statewide • GSOC DOE requirement and need for increased operator situational awareness. • Substation log-in access – automate and simplify current ITS screen access • C & I Metering Support– EMC follow-up

Compliance – Fundamental Change • The change in compliance environment is extraordinary. • Compliance enforcement has moved from voluntary compliance to potential fines of $1 million per day per violation. • FP&L was fined $25 million for violations that resulted in a major blackout. • TVA was brought before a congressional committee to explain its security vulnerabilities. • Number of requirements applicable to GSOC has increased from 274 to 540.

  10. Compliance – Fundamental Change (cont.) • Risks – New era of detailed mandatory NERC standards presents substantial risks to the corporation • Large fines • Adverse publicity • Increased long-term costs

  11. Compliance • December Critical Infrastructure Protection (CIP) audit results • Waiting for the final report from Southeastern Electric Reliability Corporation (SERC) • Already begun mitigation activities related to certain audit findings
