  8. Six games per day in one venue 6x5 = 30 line judges More than Beijing 6x3 scorers = 18 More than Beijing Why so many? Reserves and uncertainties – and it’s a long road ahead….

  9. That’s you! …potential performer - experienced and committed But you can be better…We can give you the training…. Question is: How good do you want to be? Can you visualise yourself on the Olympic Field of Play? That’s going to be your job – if you want it enough.

  10. There will be others…maybe better performers than you… You have to maintain the pace… Maintain the commitment… Train yourself as you are trained… Your target – be a member of least one of the teams of NTO's each day in the Olympics – and leave a legacy of experience.

  11. The highest level possible The greatest athletes in the world Speeds many times faster than anything you have experienced so far! An expectation of total professionalism Excitable people who’s will to win is unsurpassed 24-7 commitment…some of you might be on call way beyond an 8 hour day

  12. The Process & The people

  13. In other words the steering group/ trainers…… Identify the talent – SD & DS Contact the talent – RM, MS & CO Identify existing events as training vehicles (Care: no budget!) Invite the interested talent Train the talent Keep them involved Keep track of the training – and budget Select the best to progress

  14. Referees Players Budding Referees Non referees We cast the net wide – beyond the group of referees within UK… So you have competition!

  15. STARTED in summer 2007 in England The Olympic clock is ticking The Beach NTO's for Beijing started serious training FIVE years out. So did the Volleyball NTO's…..And their experience was already greater than ours! That means we need to catch up fast and be realistic about the task.

  16. Who & what is an NTO? • NTO’s are • National Technical Officials • Line Judges • Scorers • ITO’s are • International Referees • SSV’s are • Sport Specific Volunteers – Field of Play • Floor Moppers • Ball Retrievers

  17. The line judge style or score process The line judge or scorer duties The line judge & scorer commitment The Rules! Note: Beach…it is 90% the same philosophy 60% same technique

  18. Your existing experience of line judging or scoring may cause you to doubt your importance today. This might be because of the type of line judge decision making or scoring you have witnessed Or maybe you had a bad experience as a line judge or scorer in another life!

  19. TYPES OF NTO

  20. Looks unfit • Looks bored • Looks only at the line • Sags • Holds the flag wrong • Slouches as a scorer • Looks WRONG

  21. LJ Seep • About BOTH line judges • About the stance? • About the focus? • About the signal itself? • About the communication with the Referee? • About the preparation for making the decision and signal?

  22. Oblivious to everything – probably thinking of something other than the match Cue 2nd Video Clip

  23. Won’t make any decision – and when he/she does it will be the wrong one! Notice that scaredy-cat will be as far from the court as possible…. What distance should the line judge be from the court?

  24. 1.5 – 2 metres is usually enough. More than this and you become detached from the match.

  25. Experienced in the game and resistant to pressure Energetic – willing to go the extra yard Fit – i.e. looks athletic BMI below 28 Knowledgeable about the game and about rules Willing to learn Qualified referee …or willing to become so…or just plain smart!.

  26. Is there a template to copy?- yes there are different templates…..probably the best is…

  27. This Style…………………. This could be you

  28. They train as line judges It is seen as important to them They work as a team They employ military precision They are invariably correct Their signals are perfect They know what to do and when They don’t appear surprised– they are POKER FACED

  29. What philosophy should we cultivate? What is the manner of the line judge? How do we gauge our own professionalism? We need to be able to stand outside and evaluate ourselves

  30. Rules give the list of functions • Rules give the list of responsibilities… HOWEVER • …do not teach the Manner • …do not teach the Method • …do not teach the Style • …do not teach the Focus • …do not teach how to cooperate

  31. ITO’s & NTO’s are Facilitators They set the level of professionalism: - Through their body language - Eyes looking alert - By giving players confidence to focus on playing - By making the image of the game better - By allowing fewer arguments - By facilitating the work of the referees - By letting the players entertain

  32. Remember - Line judges relate to… 1st referee Teams Spectators TV audience …even if they don’t realise it

  33. Remember - Starts before the match…. - with other line judges - with the referees - through talk, gesture, body language - by exuding professional calm - by arriving early - by staying at the grouping point

  34. Maybe it looks slow on TV – the reality is incredibly fast

  35. The code … depends on qualities: Remember: The Rules give a basic framework to our activities as referees, scorers and line judges; We need to understand why the rule is there and what it is for; We need to apply them with common sense; convert KNOWLEDGE into WISDOM. Remember: the teams have trained for years for this opportunity – for some just being here is a victory. We must allow them to give their best effort – to have their time in the sun

  36. NTO Qualities Eyes Attention Professional Alert Active Attention to detail Knowledge of attack Knowledge of psychology Rules Knowledge Calm Dignity Decisive Anticipate React fast Cooperate Assist but not insist

  37. The Dress Code Polo Shirts – short sleeve ~ Approved Errea polo shirt with pre-embroidered badge Sweatshirt ~ Approved Errea sweatshirt with pre-embroidered badge Trousers ~ DARK NAVY BLUE TROUSERS [Not jeans, chinos, cords, cargo’s or tracksuit bottoms of any variety] Sports Shoes ~ Predominantly White Indoor sports shoes/trainers Socks white. www.kitlocker.com/eva
