  4. Significance of Petition Introduced the idea that the law was higher than the king Contradicted theories of absolute monarchs
  5. Charles… Dissolved Parliament (refused to call it back in session) Ignored petition Raised taxes Forced religion
  6. Next… Parliament passes laws to limit royal power Charles tries to arrest Parliament members (they escape) People from London stormed the palace
  7. Finally… Charles fled to Northern England Raised an army of supporters
  8. English Civil War Roundheads- Oliver Cromwell- (new general) New Model Army- defeated cavaliers Captured Charles I, held him prisoner Put him on trial, found him guilty of treasonEXECUTED
  9. Significance? Revolutionary! 1st time a monarch had been put on trial and EXECUTED by their own people
