Getting to know Me Terms to Learn
Communication • Communication: the process of sending and receiving messages to achieve understanding. • Intrapersonal Communication: “Self Talk” – helps you determine what you think and how you behave. • Interpersonal Communication: Communication with one or more individuals. - verbal symbols, non verbal symbols, and channels
Self concept: your picture of yourself formed from personal beliefs, attitudes and experiences. • Understanding and liking who we are at present is vital if we are to move ahead toward a personal goal. • Self Esteem: the opinion you have of yourself. • Believing you can succeed is the key to success.
Perception: The reception and interpretation of stimuli that has to do with the five senses. • We each have our own way of looking at things. Why we see things a certain way depends on our backgrounds, our experiences. • Stereotype: label people as part of a group and treat them as if they possess only the characteristics of that group.
