  1. RESEARCH PAPER • Poses a particular question or thesis about its subject and then tries to answer that question • Your paper should have an investigative and/or analytical approach • This is not a REPORT • Follow MLA format (heading, documentation, and Works Cited page)

  2. RESEARCH PROCESS • Begin the research process with an open mind as the final position you defend and/or the actual topic may change during the processs • Research to become an “expert” on your topic • Identify the recognized experts within your field/topic • Your Works Cited page should indicate that you were careful and thorough in research

  3. TOPIC SELECTION • Once your topic is selected, you must decide how to approach it analytically • You will always need to NARROW your topic • Think of SUPTOPICS while researching • SUBJECT: NFL • NARROW: Player safety/Rules changes • TOPIC: NFL’s responsibility to ensure player safety • THESIS: “The NFL should have acted sooner in modifying the game to enhance player safety.”

  4. SOURCE SELECTION • Always hold yourself to a high standard in finding credible and academic sources • SUGGESTIONS: use a data base, Google Scholar, government documents, journals/periodicals (vs. magazines) • ALWAYS scrutinize web sources to ensure credibility (sponsor/funding, updates, links, etc.)

  5. RESEARCH & DOCUMENTATION • QUOTES • According to MacMillan, the NFL “deliberately withheld medical records from reporters covering player safety” (14). • DO THIS SPARINGLY: this is your paper; synthesize ideas provided by others in your research • PARAPHRASE • Before the 2012 season, it was common practice for players to lose consciousness during the first half of play and then retake the field in the second half (MacMillan 23). • DO THIS OFTEN: avoid plagairism and show off your research efforts
